Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The extended forecast at this point is unreliable, with massive run-to-run differences in both the ECMWF and GFS models. Yesterday’s forecast for the weekend, if you remember, had about 5” of rain for Mt. Hood between Saturday and Sunday. It also had a foot of snow Friday night into Saturday morning. Read this and marvel at the difference…

For Tuesday through Thursday, Mt. Hood will have sunshine. The exception to this will be Tuesday afternoon, when there will be a period of mid and high-level clouds. Wind for that three-day period will be light, maxing out at NW 10 on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 11,000′-13,000′, with 5000′ temps in the mid 40’s. Mt. Hood will be a nice place to go to escape the cold valley air.

Now, let’s move on to Friday, noting that the next set of model runs could be different. The day starts off clear and quickly turns cloudy with snow starting up around 7am and continuing through Saturday morning. The snow level will be 10,000′ at 4am and 6000′ when the precip hits. The snow level will fall to 1000′ by Saturday morning. Between 4am and 4pm, the mountain will see .3-.5” water value (WV), for 3-5” of snow. Another .1-.2” WV falls overnight, for a couple more inches. Wind will be impressive, and could contribute to increased snowfall amounts due to orographic effects: WNW 40 through midnight and NW 15 after midnight.

Saturday currently looks cloudy with flurries that switch to drizzle after midnight. Honestly, I wouldn’t put much stock in this forecast at this point – there’s just too much variation between model runs.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was just sitting here reflecting this morning on how odd it is that I climb right out of bed and dive into writing a forecast. In the moment, it doesn’t feel odd – almost every day I find myself happy and excited to engage with the weather models. Thank you to all of you for supporting me so I can do something (forecasting for you) that makes me so happy!

Those of us who have jobs that fuel our hearts are lucky. Those of us who don’t can find something (even something little) to like about our work. Another option for feeding our souls is to find something outside of work that creates meaning in our lives. This is different for everyone.

Sometimes it can feel scary or embarassing or pointless or wasteful to use our valuable time in pursuit of the little things that make us feel alive. I’d encourage you to drop your judgements and ignore the judgements of others. Nobody but you can tell you what gives your life meaning at work or outside of work. Give yourself a break. Give yourself the gift of creating time for the things you love. Have an awesome day, and happy Hanukkah!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Here’s the Rooster Rock forecast: E 50-55 Tuesday and Wednesday. East 45-50 on Wednesday. Take off 20 for Stevenson and 25 for Viento. Friday starts off with east wind and switches to W 22-25 in the afternoon.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another Nothing day in the Gorge, but there’s a chance the Nothing will break this afternoon leaving us with high clouds. Temps will be near 30 early and in the mid 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts off with Nothing and sees a chance of clearing in the afternoon. Temps will be near freezing early and in the upper 30’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Thursday looks exactly like Wednesday. There’s a chance of a short period of freezing rain between 5:30am and 11:30am on Friday morning.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Even though we have the Nothing, you’ll want to stay away from trails exposed to open air – they’ll still thaw, leaving your bike coated in mud and your tracks damaging the trails. To make up for it, go to the HRATS fundraiser on the 14th at Double Mountain. If you decide to road ride or gravel grind, watch out for icy areas in the fog zone. Speaking of mixed surfaces, the Cold Lap is at 3pm at Dirty Fingers every Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah!!! Also tonight, there’s pickup touch rugby at 5:45 at the Hood River Marina. There are two by-donation events: a women’s only (anyone identifying as “female”) mobility, strength and self-defense class at First Light in Hood River at 6pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage monks at 6:30 at Yoga Samadhi. On Wednesday night, there’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.
