Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies in the 20’s and full-on sunshine stick around for the next four days, at least. With Portland forecast to lose its cloud blanket early each day, and with temps forecast to be 5-10 degrees above normal, you’ll want to watch out for the Midday Lull.

Looking at Thursday, it’s a cool start to the Gorge with a marine layer in Portland. Gradients start at 0.11 (pdx-dls) and 0.03 (dls-psc). Looking at the river, we’ve got westerlies at 20-23 form Viento to Mosier with 10-13 pretty much everywhere else. The wind holds through early afternoon at 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier before dropping to 14-17 or so in the western Gorge mid afternoon. To get your fill of Avery or Rufus, wait until the later afternoon or evening – models like the idea of 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus. Not much happens east of there; max wind in the eastern desert is 13-16. River flow is 178kcfs, river temp is 69F (although it feels like bathwater at The Wall), and high temp for Hood River today is 83F.

Friday starts out with 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 7-10 elsewhere. That won’t last. Pressures increase in the desert and knock down the gradients. By late morning, the wind is forecast to fall to 11-14 between Stevenson and Swell with 7-10 near Hood River and nothin’ east of there. High temp: 92F.

Westerlies pick back up for the weekend, defying yesterday’s prediction of Sunday being a weak day. Will this forecast hold? We’ll have to wait and see – four days is a long ways out. As of this morning, it appears we’ll see 21-25ish on Saturday, strongest west of The Dalles. Sunday’s currently looking like 27-31, and so is Monday. Enjoy the windy stretch!

Coast, Jones, Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Thursday: NW10-15/NW10-15/N25-30+, NW swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Friday: NW15-20+/N20-25/30-35, NW 3′ @ 7. Saturday: NNW 15-20/N20-25/N30-40, NW 3′ @ 7. Jones Thursday: 18-21. Friday: 17-20. Saturday: 17-20. Sauvie’s Thursday: 13-16. Friday: NW 11-14. Saturday: NNW 16-19.

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
