Gorge Wind Forecast
Westerlies continue for at least the next three days. Model spread increases after Sunday, so forecasts after that aren’t all that reliable. Thursday morning starts with a pdx-dls gradient of .10 and westerlies in the 14-18 range from Viento to the mouth of the White Salmon. East of there, the wind is mostly 10-13. The wind speeds all through the Gorge hold through mid-morning, dip midday, and return at 21-24 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. River flow is 123kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp today: 83.
Tomorrow brings a slightly warmer and slightly less windy day as high pressure briefly builds over the Gorge. A front approaching from the northwest in the afternoon gives an upward nudge to the westerlies. Like clockwork, we’ll have 14-17 in the morning from Viento to Swell. As Portland heats up, the wind will dip to 11-14 midday, but Stevenson, Hood River, and Mosier will join in. As that front approaches, afternoon westerlies, after 2pm or so, pick up to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. The wind fills in to The Dalles at 15-18 after 5pm. Expect light wind east of The Dalles. High temp: 88.
That front swings through during the day on Saturday. With this setup, models tend to predict more than reality delivers. Still, here’s the forecast, based on the model gradients: 22-26 from Viento to Mosier to start the day. 26-30 from Viento to Rufus through early afternoon. The western Gorge drops to gusty 17-23 in the afternoon. Head east, say… Avery to Arlington, for 26-30. High temp: 77.
Sunday’s prediction from the models currently looks light light easterlies. Given the fact that Portland will stay cooler than the desert, and given the presence of strong offshore high pressure, westerlies might just stick around. For now, let’s call it 12-15 from Viento to Swell early in the morning with light wind elsewhere. Midday wind will probably drop to 5-10 or less. Best guess for the afternoon is 12-15 from Stevenson to Swell with an evening addition of 10-13 from Hood River to Mosier. After Sunday, models diverge like fish seeking paths upstream. We’ll have to wait at least another day before tackling the longer-range forecast.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
