Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re looking for a rest day from wind sports, you’ll need to look elsewhere than the Gorge. The best it’s going to offer you is lighter wind on Saturday and Sunday. Models serve up strong westerlies today, tomorrow, and for the better part of next week.

Thursday morning starts off with big gradients – 0.17 pdx-dls and 0.07 dls-psc. Is today going to be the day that Doug’s and Rowena come back to life? Probably? Dawn Patrol wind is 25-30 between Viento and Mosier with 20-23 from Lyle to Rufus and 16-19 at Stevenson and Arlington. It won’t take long for 28-32 between Viento and Mosier followed a couple hours later to 28-32 from Lyle to Avery with 18-23 at Rufus and 15-18 at Arlington. Stevenson finds a way to 25-28 when the clouds burn off. Models insist that our late afternoon wind will be 26-29 from Stevenson to Mosier with 28-32 from Lyle to Rufus with 26-29 at Arlington. River flow is 135kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temps are 78F for Hood River and 85F for Biggs.

A deeper marine layer on Friday sets up another round of strong westerlies. It appears that a weak disturbance offshore might negatively impact the wind in the western Gorge in the afternoon. There will be plenty of wind before that and to the east. Dawn Patrol starts at 21-24 from Viento to Doug’s with 5-10 at cloudy Stevenson and 12-15 east of Doug’s. By mid to late morning, the wind picks up to 25-28 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at still-cloudy Stevenson, 20-23 between Lyle and Rufus and 13-16 at Arlington. The wind backs off to gusty 18-23 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon and picks up to 27-31 between Lyle and Arlington with 20-23 at Threemile. High temp: 77F Hood River.

High pressure builds inland from the southwest on Saturday knocking the gradients downward. Dawn Patrol will be 14-17 between Viento and Mosier with 10-13 east and west of that stretch. Give it a few hours. Westerlies build to 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 at Rufus and light/variable wind to the east. Sunday also looks like 20-23 max. Models suggest Monday through Thursday next week will be stronger, with averages in the 27-33 range. Good luck finding a rest day!

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
