Thursday: sun, uninterrupted

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when the mountains and beaches are closed? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider subscribing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to subscribe? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $12.34 or more gets you a subscription. Click below to subscribe. Thank you!!

The Forecast

CoronaChat

As I said a couple days ago, these stay home orders are working. Oregon is leading the way in flattening the curve (slowing infections), and Washington is doing a fine job too. Nice work, folks! Now, let’s talk money, just in case y’all have been corona-ed out of a job or need some extra cash.

First, those stimulus checks. If you are an adult, you must have filed a tax return in 2018 or 2019.* For most people who can afford the sports involved in this report, filing taxes is a given. However, some of your less-resourced friends or neighbors or clients or patients may not have filed. Please check in with folks and make sure they have. Next, folks who have direct deposit will get money faster than those who don’t. Not everyone has a bank account, and the fast majority of folks who don’t are also under-resourced. Help folks get a bank account so they can get money faster.

*Initially, folks on social security were going to have to file returns too. That is no longer the case. Those people will now have their stimulus checks sent in the same way that they receive SSI/SSDI checks.

Next, if you have been laid off, there is a decent chance you may now qualify for Oregon Health Plan or Washington Apple Health. These Medicaid programs are income-based, not asset-based. You may have lost your private insurance, but you may qualify for public insurance. Visit your state’s website to apply. At the worst, you will be able to purchase insurance on the exchange if you have recently lost yours. #MedicaidForAll #stayhomesavegrandma #stayhomestayhealthy

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

All the mountains are closed, the forest is closed, and neither in-bounds nor out-of-bounds snowsports are available at this time. Some of you will be tempted to go out backcountry skiing. Take a look at this sobering article about a recent BC rescue and consider carefully if you want to put others at risk. Remember, Timberline, Skibowl, and Meadows are all closed to uphill traffic at this time. This is to comply with Kate Brown’s executive orders. It’s the law, folks. Obey it!

Mountain weather: continued sunshine… For Thursday, it’ll be clear and sunny in the hills. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 12,000′. Wind: NNE 10 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon and overnight. Friday will be sunny, yet again. FAF: 11,000′ in the morning, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Wind: NW 15-20 early, NW 25-30 in the afternoon and overnight. Saturday starts with some high clouds. Mid-level clouds develop in the afternoon, and the sky clears overnight. FAF: 7000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, 3000′ overnight. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, NE 20-25 in the afternoon, and N 15 overnight. Dry weather continues for the long haul with a very slight chance of showers middle of next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

First, a public service announcement. All Oregon and Washington State Parks are closed at this time. All Port of Hood River waterfront access is closed at this time, although the walking path is open. The Army Corps has closed all parks. They have also closed boat ramps. Swell City is also closed. It’s best not to go. If you do, follow Maui rules: rig quickly, get in the water, and leave as soon as you are done. No hanging out at the beach. Maintain at least six feet space on land and on the water. Do not place yourself directly upwind or downwind of anyone. Don’t go harder than 50%, and keep your focus at 100%. This is not the time to get injured.

For Thursday, we’ll start the day with easterlies at 15-20 at Rooster and Viento. Stevenson will join a couple hours after dawn. By noon, the wind goes calm. Late in the afternoon, it turns around to light westerly at 5-8 or less. Friday sees strong offshore high pressure combine with a desert heat low. Morning wind will be 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. By midday, we’ll have 24-27 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Afternoon wind, driven by that high-low combo, picks up to 26-30 from Stevenson to Arlington.

Saturday starts with 22-26. It appears the wind will fade in the day as a weak cold front attempts to drop in from the NE. This takes the wind down to 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light wind out east. Sunday brings a return to easterlies at 17-20.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

ALL trails in the Gorge are closed.. Hood River County (Post Canyon, Pinemont), SDS (Underwood, Whoopdee), and Kreps (Hospital Hill) lands are closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus by incoming hoards of visitors. DNR land (Nestor) is closed per the DNR website and a little tiny sign at the bottom of the Nestor trail. USFS (44 Road trails, Syncline) are closed. State Parks (Columbia Hills, Twin Tunnels) are closed. There were two considerations: protecting medical professionals, and keeping crowds away when the weather is nice. Google Sun Valley’s Covid-19 rate if your are curious what crowds of recreation visitors can do to spread coronavirus.
