Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s Thursday, and a warm and sunny day is on tap for the slopes. Stormy, snowy weather is forecast all day Friday followed by easterly orographic snow on Saturday. After that: a couple days of frigid temps. Sunday holds the potential for very strong wind and very cold weather with sub-zero wind chill. After that: a slow warmup into differing model forecasts. The general picture keeps dry weather around til the end of next week.
Call it “spring skiing” on Thursday, and wax warm. Unless you’re a Nordic skier… those trails are below the inversion and are starting the day in the 20’s. We’ll see sunshine all day long. The free air freezing level starts at 10,000′, falls to 8500′, and drops to 2500′ overnight. Temps max out in the low 40’s at 5000′. Wind will be NW 20-25 this morning, NW 30-40 this afternoon, and NW 45-50 overnight.
Wind could affect lift ops on Friday morning as a properly-sourced (NW is always the right direction for storms on Mt. Hood!) cold front whacks Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 2500′ during the day and will fall to 1000′ overnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 4-6” wind-affected new snow. We could see reality overperform. Overnight, the air dries out some, thanks to the orographics wringing out all the moisture. Just a trace is forecast. Wind: NW 45-50 early (will affect lift ops), NW 25-35 in the afternoon (may affect lift ops), and N 10+ after midnight. Meadows does particularly poorly in NW wind. Check their website before heading up.
Saturday’s forecast is interesting. An arctic front swings in from the NNE and brings very cold air. It will probably have just enough lift and moisture to drive some easterly orographic snowfall during the day. Let’s guess, shall we? How about 1-3” from the opposite-to-normal direction. The snow level will be 1500′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. 850Mb (5000′) temps fall from -5C in the morning to -12C in the afternoon to -16C (brr!) overnight. Wind: N 10+ in the morning, E 15-20 in the afternoon, and E 35 overnight.
Sunday looks clear, very dry, very windy, and very cold. Temps will be in the single digits much of the day, and wind chills will be well below zero. But hey, the sun will be out! East wind is forecast at 35mph all day long, and it won’t fade until the night. Timberline’s lifts do not handle east winds well; check their website before heading up. For whatever reason, Meadows tends to survive the easterlies better. Still. Check. And plan to cover up all your exposed skin so it doesn’t freeze. Temps on the mountain (but not in the lowlands) warm some on Monday for a brilliant, sunny day on the slopes! Enjoy this not-boring mountain weather!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Very strong offshore high pressure this morning contributes to big Gorge gradients this afternoon (It’s Thursday). We start with pressures of 30.66/30.60/30.57 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.03. Just wait. Westerlies pick up to 26-30+ from Stevenson to Doug’s this afternoon with 15-18 at Biggs (but be prepared for the potential for a forecast-beating result out there) and 10mph or less to the east. River flow reading this morning (just one today) is 112kcfs, river temp is 39F, and high temp forecast is 49F. We do have significant marine cloud penetration this morning, but models are insistent that will burn off. If it doesn’t, watch Rufus for best results. And stop at Amayah’s Indian food cart for lunch!
Friday starts with 17-20 from Stevenson to Viento, 11-14 from Viento to Doug’s, and 24-27 The Dalles to Arlington. Stevenson to Doug’s settle in at 17-20, and Avery to Arlington holds at 24-27. High temp: 46F. Saturday starts with light easterlies. A cold front sweeps in from the NNE and turns the wind to E 15-25 everywhere in the Gorge: up down, east, west, north, south. Rooster eventually picks up to 30-35.

Hood River Weather Forecast
Partly cloudy sky this morning turns clear this afternoon and cloudy overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Friday will be drizzly. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the mid 40’s. Moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday will bring light rain then light snow. Or maybe the timing will be right for snow all day. 1-3” if it happens. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the low 40’s. Moderate easterlies. No rainbows.

There’s a giant, all-hands-on-deck HRATS Family Man cleanup happening on Saturday, 1/28 from 10am-3pm. Second chance: Feb 4th. Please bring wheelbarrows and snacks. Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.
Cycling
Be thoughtful about your riding choices as we enter this dry period. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
