Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a cloudy morning on Mt. Hood, and that’s the story for Thursday. The general picture for the next several days looks decidedly springlike: warmer temps than we’ve had recently and a bit of snow here and there.

For Thursday, we’ll have high clouds all day. A few sprinkles are possible, but not highly likely. The snow level will be 7500′ in the morning and will slowly fall to 6000′ as the sky clears Thursday night. Wind will be NE 15 early, SE 10 in the afternoon, and SW 10 overnight.

Friday starts out clear. High clouds move in during the morning and precip starts up around noon. The snow level starts at 6000′ and drops to 5500′ during the bulk of the precip. After the front moves through in the evening, the snow level drops more, to 2500′. Precip: 0.2” water value (WV) falls between noon and 5pm. That might be rain at first and then snow, or it might be wet snow. Either way, call it 1-1.5” of wet snow. Another 0.1” WV falls overnight, for another inch of new. Wind will be SW 10 during the day, SW 15 in the evening, and W 15 after midnight.

Saturday looks mostly clear with a chance of flurries in both the morning and the afternoon. The snow level will be 2500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ after midnight. Up to 1” of new will fall in the 24 hour period, mostly in the evening. Wind will be W 15 early, NW 5-10 in the afternoon, and light SW overnight. Sunday looks clear. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning and will slowly rise to 6000′ overnight. Light and variable southerlyish wind.

Gorge Wind

Our extended period of easterlies has ended, and we’re now moving into a period of westerlies. For those of you jonesing to get on the river, you’ll only be doing it with your light wind gear. Fortunately, there’s plenty of fun to be had in light wind now! Speaking of gear, the first swap meet of the season is at Luhr Jensen on Saturday the 30th.

Wind for Thursday: we start off with gradients of W .03 and .02 with a river temp of 40 degrees and flow of 147kcfs. The wind will be in the gusty 13-16 range from Stevenson to Biggs for much of the day, with some areas (Viento, for example) receiving more wind than others (Swell, for example). Friday sees the approach of a frontal system, making for another round of gust westerlies. We’ll have 5-10 in the western Gorge with 10-13 from The Dalles eastward. Saturday starts off light in the west and picks up to 5-10. slightly stronger wind will be found in the eastern Gorge: 14-17 from The Dalles to Arlington in the morning with 11-14 in the afternoon. Sunday looks light and variable.

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline report: people have been riding Maui, Moab, the doubletrack, and Hidden. I received a report yesterday that Columbia Hills is clear of snow. Add most of the Klickitat Trail and Deschutes River Trail to that list too. Other local trails are still snow-covered. The road biking and gravel grinding continues to be excellent.
