Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

High wind stuck around for much of Wednesday. Snow got battered, and many lifts stayed closed ‘til midday. Nothing like that is forecast today! Tomorrow morning… windy and stormy, but not nearly as intense. We then transition to a dry and partly sunny period Saturday, Sunday, and probably Monday too.

Thursday, however, will be snowy all day. The snow level starts at 2000′ near Mt. Hood, rises to 4000′ mid-morning, and climbs to 5000′ after midnight. There’s a chance of a brief period of very wet snow or even mixed precip late afternoon. Maybe. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day for 3-4” dense new snow. Another 0.7” WE is in the cards tonight. Call that 4-6” dense new snow, perhaps with a short period of snain; that said, intense precip tonight could keep it snow-not-other. Wind starts at S 5-15 this morning and slowly builds to WSW 30-35 this afternoon. After midnight, the wind rises to W 50.

Friday kicks off stormy and snowy. Wind sticks around, but the precip fades. We could even see sunbreaks! Overnight: clear sky up high with clouds up to 5000′. About 0.2” to 0.3” WE is forecast in the morning for a few inches of new snow. A trace is forecast in the afternoon. Wind: W 50 in the morning slowly fades to W 35 in the afternoon. This much wind could affect lift ops early, but slowed lifts are more likely than closed lifts. Overnight, the wind drops to W 25.

Saturday starts out with a mix of sun up high and clouds down low. By afternoon, it’ll just be cloudy. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ in the morning and will fall to 1500′ overnight. Wind: W 25 early turns light and variable in the afternoon and stays that way. Know what else will happen? Full parking lots! Sunday looks sunny and cooler with light wind. Parking lots: full. As of now, ditto for Monday’s weather, but probably not for the parking lots. We’ll return to your regularly scheduled snowstorms next week. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

After a long period of “some sort of wind’, we’ll be taking a few-day break starting Friday afternoon. That’ll open the opportunity for some windless activities! Thursday starts with light easterlies. The wind builds to 15-20 from Rooster to Viento in the afternoon and briefly picks up to 30-40 around midnight before quickly fading. Friday starts with W 10 at Stevenson and 10-15 at Rooster. By daybreak, you’ll find W 20-25 from Rooster to Viento, light westerlies in the central Gorge, and 20-25 east of The Dalles. Jump on it; by noon, the wind will drop to “light”. Saturday will be light westerly early and light/variable in the afternoon. Sunday: light/variable.

An outdoor related event coming up: Gorge Ultimate starts its Winter League January 8th on Sundays from 5-7 at the Hood River High School Lighted Turf, but will be in a gym if snow is on the turf. Sign up to be on a team by Dec 31st, or be a sub: https://gorge.ultimatecentral.com/e/winter-league-2023

Cycling

Now it’s wet and muddy and snowy on the trails. Just don’t – if you ride in the mud, you’ll do damage. You’ll do extra damage if the trails experienced freezing and are now thawed. The Family Man closure kicked off on November 1st – the area around Family Man and Riordan Hill Road will be closed into December. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
