Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s going to be a drizzly day on Mt. Hood today (Thursday), and then the snow level will slowly, ever so slowly, drop through the weekend. We’ll pick up a few inches of snow here and there, but the next possibility for a big snowstorm isn’t until the middle of next week. And even then, it’s not guaranteed. Fingers crossed.

The weather stays warm on Friday, and just a bit of rain is forecast. The snow level will be 7500′ this morning and 8500′ this afternoon and evening. Just 0.1” rain is forecast during the day. Overnight, the forecast is for just-cloudy weather. Wind: SW 30-50 in the morning, SW 20-40 in the afternoon, and SW 20-35 overnight.

Friday starts out cloudy. Mixed precip or snain or rain arrives early afternoon. Temps slowly cool overnight and switch the p-type to snow. The snow level will be 8500′ in the morning, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) of mixed precip is forecast prior to sunset. Overnight, another 0.2” is forecast. That’ll be mixed precip or wet snow. Call it up to 2” new, but probably less. Wind: SW 20-35 in the morning, WSW 25-30 in the afternoon, and SW 15-30 overnight.

Light snowfall is forecast on Saturday with slightly heavier snowfall overnight. The snow level starts at 5000′ and falls to 4000′ in the evening. Just a trace is forecast during the day. Overnight, 0.2-0.3” WE falls, for 2-3” dense new snow. Wind: SW 15-30 in the morning, SE 25 in the afternoon, and S 5-10 overnight. Sunday’s forecast starts dry and then transition to snowy. UP to 4” of new are forecast. Monday starts dry (with excellent groom!) and adds light snowfall in the afternoon. Temps will be cooler on Monday and into next week, and the snow quality will improve. All eyes then turn to Wednesday, when some ensemble members are calling for a significant snowstorm. We’ll keep a close eye on this!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

DO NOT ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
