Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! This will be the last forecast until I get back from my retreat at the end of next week. I’ll see you next Friday. I was planning on doing a forecast tomorrow, but I see brown pow in my future and want to sneak in an early mountain bike ride before I leave town! While I”m gone, please don’t bother the housesitter. As of this morning, models give the best chances for wind on Saturday afternoon (but thunder may interfere), Sunday in the desert, and Monday in the Corridor. After that, there’s just too much range in the possibilities to make a call other than commenting on the overall weather picture.

Let’s look at Thursday. Pressures at 7am (I slept in) were 29.89/29.89/29.88 for gradients of 0.00 and 0.01. Not much. The wind will be light and variable all day long. River flow yesterday was 98-157kcfs, river temp is 70F, and high temp forecast is 65F. Consider going fishing today – 17134 fish made it past Bonneville dam yesterday! Friday starts out dead calm on the river. Do a sport that takes advantage of zero-wind conditions. The wind will pick up to E 10 from Cascade Locks to Viento for a few hours mid morning. That’s it for Friday. High temp: 75F.

Saturday sees a weather system approaching. That’ll drive gusty afternoon westerlies. The day starts off with a brief bout of E 10-15 near Stevenson and only Stevenson. Wait until afternoon (although the timing could change between now and Saturday) for gusty 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Wait a bit longer for the Executive Session, after 5pm, and you might just get gusty 18-22 from Stevenson to Avery. That said, this wind is driven by an approaching front, and the associated dynamics could kick off some thunderstorms. So… no promises.

Head to the desert, east of the rain, on Sunday for mid to upper 20’s. Models currently call for low 20’s Monday near Hood River. After that, there’s just too much uncertainty to make a call. Have a great week, and I”ll see you at the end of next week for more fun on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
