Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There’s actual fluffy powder on Mt. Hood this morning, and there’s a lot more coming tomorrow. Saturday looks snowy in the morning before heavy rain moves in during the afternoon. As of right now, Sunday looks warm, dry and clear after sunrise and Monday looks warm and clear in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon. Details to follow…

For Thursday, we’ll see additional snow on Mt. Hood, especially tonight. The snow level will be 500′ early, 1000′ in the aftenroon, and 500′ after midnight. The mountain will pick up .3” water value (WV) during the day, for 3-4” of fluffy powder. Another .8” WV moves in tonight, for 8-10” of pow. Wind will be SW 15-20 early and W 25-30 overnight.

Friday looks very snowy. Yay! The snow level will be 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 500′ after midnight, making for very high quality snowfall. About .8” WV falls during the day, for 8-10” of powder. Another .9” falls overnight, for another 9-11” of fresh snow. Wind Friday will be WSW 30 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and WSW 45+ after midnight.

If you’re riding Saturday, get it as early as possible, as warming temps are going to impact snow quality and eventually turn the falling snow to falling rain. Wind is likely to be problematic on Saturday, impacting lift operations. The snow level will be 500′ early, 5000′ by 7am, and 6500′ from 4pm on, after which we’ll see rain. We may see a switch to rain as early as noon. The mountain will receive 3” WV (yes, three inches) between 4am and 4pm. At least 1” of that is likely to fall as dense snow, for 8-10”+ of new before a switch to rain. Bring a shovel to dig yourself out of the parking lot. No, really. Another 1.8” WV falls overnight. As rain. Wind will be WSW 45 early, W 55 (lift-stopping) at 7am, and W 40-50 for the rest of the day and night.

Sunday looks calmer. A trace of rain falls early, and then the sky clears for the rest of the day. The free air freezing level will be 6500′ early and 9000′ after 7am. Wind will be W 40 early, becoming SW 20-25 after 7am.

Random Morning Thoughts

Here’s today’s mind hack: When we engage in an activity, we often break it down into the steps that are required to make it happen. For example, if I want to go XC skiing, I might think that I have to get dressed, pack the car, drive on icy roads, put my gear on, ski, take my gear off, drive on icy roads, unpack the car, and then (maybe) shower. Thinking about all those steps can paralyze us. We might focus on all the not-fun parts at the expense of the fun parts. This can keep us from doing stuff. Not just fun stuff. Regular old responsibilities.

One way to counter this is to stay focused on what we’re trying to achieve. Each time we think of one of those micro-steps that lead to our goal, we can redirect our mind back to the goal. Doing this over and over will eventually train the mind to stop ruminating on the un-fun parts and focus more on the reward of doing or achieving something good. Try it out. Might work for you. Might not. Have an awesome day either way.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon is currently closed to all users to protect the trails from damage. Whoopdee is closed to bikes and horses for the same reason. Syncline remains mobbed. I’m not sure about the upper half of Nestor, but the Horse Camp section is in good shape with one tree down.
