Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Thursday, and according to the Meadows snow report, today is “one of those days”. For those of you who aren’t working (I’m working too), head up there for sunshine and absolutely perfect groom, parks, and Nordic. Don’t worry – the near-perfect, sunny weather will stick around for most of the extended forecast.

Thursday will be sunny and cool all day. The free air freezing level will be 500-1000′ this morning and will rise to 1500-2000′ this afternoon before dropping back to 0′ overnight with 850mb temps at -3C. No precip today. Just sun. Wind: NW 20-30 early fades to N 10 this afternoon and becomes light and variable overnight.

If you liked that forecast, you’ll love Friday: sun all day and pretty much zero wind. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight with temps at 5000′ rising to 32F in the afternoon. Wind: light and variable all day becoming W 10 overnight. Snow: packed powder. It doesn’t get any better than that for a groomer, park, BC, or XC day. Enjoy!

Saturday starts off clear. A weather system smashes on in mid to late afternoon and brings an uncertain amount of snow with a more certain amount of wind. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ under clear sky to start the day. The snow level, when that system arrives, will be 4500′ and will fall to 2000′ overnight. Models disagree on snow amounts giving us anything from a trace to 0.5” water equivalent… translation: a trace to half a foot of snow overnight into Sunday morning That’s not helpful, is it? Wind: W 10 in the morning becoming W 45 in the afternoon and NW 20-30 overnight.

Sunday returns for the duration of Sunday. If the Saturday system overperforms, you’ll find some powder. If not, it’ll be packed powder and hardpack and pretty darn nice. The free air freezing level will be 500′ in the morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and will rise to 6000′ overnight. Wind: NW 20-30 early, NW 10-20 in the afternoon, and NW 10-20 overnight. As of right now, Monday looks cloudy with a trace of mixed precip possible. After that: dry and sunny for at least a few days. Enjoy!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Friday’s at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class (brand new) at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon. The sprint course is 2 two laps around the sailing buoy near Wells Island and back – 3.5 miles.

Cycling

Please do not ride Syncline! It’s super muddy and there are creeks running down the trails. If you ride, you’ll do major damage. Please ride gravel roads instead! Same goes for other trails – muddy enough that you’ll damage them. Perhaps you could try the Deschutes or Klickitat trails, but roads and gravel are better choices for the health of the trail systems. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
