Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s yet another nice start to the day on Mt. Hood – Timberline picked up about 7” of new snow overnight. If you want to earn your turns today, remember that Meadows is closed to hiking today as they set up for tomorrow’s operations. While they’re doing that, they’ll be picking up snow. Mostly cloudy weather is forecast for Friday followed by very light mixed precip Saturday and very light rain/fog/mist/clouds on Sunday. After a cool day on Monday, temps slowly rise to the “spring skiing” zone by the middle of next week. It actually looks like the Meadows Pond Skim will happen on a warm, sunny day this year!

Let’s reel it in and look at Thursday. High clouds quickly give way to snow, and plenty of it. The snow level will be 1000′ early, 3000′ this afternoon, and 2000′-2500′ overnight. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast today for about 3-4” new snow. Overnight, 0.4” to 0.6” WE is forecast. That’s another 4-6” of decent-quality fresh snow. Wind: SW 10-15 this morning builds to SW 15-30 this afternoon and W 45 overnight.

Friday may have a few flurries, but mostly it will just be mostly cloudy. That’s good, because it’ll help the snow hold up to the strong April sun while you spend the day making powder turns. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ overnight. Just a trace of snow is forecast, and that’s most likely early in the day. Wind: W 45 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Saturday sees somewhat warmer temps with just a bit of snain or mist possible. Maybe fog too! The snow level will be 5000′ early, 5500′ by midday, and 6500′ from the afternoon on through the night. Just a trace of precipitation is forecast, so don’t let that upset your snowsport plans. Wind: W 15 in the morning, light SW midday, and WSW 10-15 in the evening.

Looking longer term, Monday will probably be cool with a few flurries or an inch of snow. After that, the weather turns warmer and drier, gradually becoming warmer and sunnier as we approach next weekend. Most members of the ensembles set us up for warm/dry weather next weekend. The question now is “how warm?” We shall see!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much will be happening the next few days, but a pattern shift Sunday into Monday will probably give us stronger westerlies. We’ll also see a bit of a warming trend. For Thursday, however, it’ll be calm all day. River flow reading (we only got one this morning) is 164kcfs, river temp is 48F, and high temp forecast is 50F. Friday starts with gusty 18-23 from The Dalles to Arlington with 11-14 in the western Gorge. The wind will settle at gusty 18-22 or so from Mosier to Rufus or perhaps Lyle to Rufus in the afternoon. This is a low reliability event. High temp: 56F. Saturday looks calm. High temp: 62F. Head east of The Dalles on Sunday for 24-28. High temp: 59F. Ensembles hint that Monday will be a windier day than Sunday.

Cycling

Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. My understanding is that Post Canyon is snow-free to the top of Borderline. IT’s been raining on and off. If it rained more than 0.1”, it’s likely to be slick and muddy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. With rain often stopping on the west side of Hood River, you may have better luck at Whoopdee or Syncline or Hospital Hill (which is full of ticks and poison oak). Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
