Gorge Wind Forecast

Between the offshore low pressure and inland high pressure, we’ll be hanging out (mostly) in the doldrums between today (Thursday) and the middle of next week. Models then hint at a return to westerlies. Fingers crossed! Let’s start with Thursday. Not much going on to help us offshore. Not much going on inland. Pressures at 6am were 30.13/30.07/30.07. That’s 0.06 and nothin’ for early gradients. Weak onshore flow this morning gives way to even weaker onshore flow this afternoon as the metro area and the desert attempt to equalize temps. You might find a couple hours of 15-19 at Viento early this morning. You may also find 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell or Hood River late morning before a fade to light westerly or light/variable this afternoon. River flow readings yesterday were 310-352kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 79F.

Friday starts light and variable. Easterlies rise to 15mph or so from Rooster to Viento midday. In the afternoon, they’ll drop to 10-15 at Rooster and 5-10 from Stevenson to Viento. High temp: 84F. Saturday starts with E 15mph from Rooster to Viento. The wind holds through early afternoon. Easterlies pick up to 10mph or so from Swell to Arlington meaning you could have a very mellow downwind paddle from somewhere to the east to somewhere to the west. High temp: 90ish. Slightly stronger easterlies are forecast on Sunday along with slightly warmer weather.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. Cycling

Current Post Canyon closures: 140/Blue Car Downhill and connections closed indefinitely. On weekdays, Upper GP, Lower GP, and the top of Baby GP are closed through approximately May 17th. Eldorado, Chorus, and FMS are currently closed and will reopen approximately May 11. Do not violate these closures. Post Canyon is a tree farm, and we ride there at the grace of Hood River County. Thank you!

Post is snow-free at least to the top of Borderline. Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: Mt. Defiance says you shouldn’t plant your tomatoes, but if you’re below 500-1000′, Hood River Weather and TATAS thinks planting tomatoes this week is a good idea. It’s also time (for me, anyway) to get your beans started indoors. They generally do better direct-sow, but they also generally get eaten by slugs if I do that. If you’re a planner (I generally am not), consider starting next year’s compost pile now. This is ag country, and there’s a lot of manure looking for a good home. Happy gardening.
