Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Mt. Hood is in for quite a bit of snow over the next couple of days. If you’re looking for not-snowy day, keep your eyes on Saturday. Snow returns on Sunday and may (or may not) transition to rain Sunday night into early next week. Models are all over the place, but there are solid signs that temps will rise above freezing at 5000′. Also… sorry about the late forecast. I was on a crisis call until 1am!

OK. So Thursday. It’s snowing, and will continue to snow, and reality is already beating the models. The snow level will be 0-1000′ this morning (it’s snowing in Hood River), 1500′ this afternoon, and 0-1500′ overnight. Models only call for 0.2” water equivalent by this afternoon, but we’re already past that. So, let’s go with 0.2” to 0.4” today for 2-5” of dry snow. Another 0.7” water equivalent (WE) is forecast tonight with SW wind and -5C temps for 7-9” powder. Wind will be S 5-15 this morning, E 30 midday, and SW 15-30 overnight.

Snow continues on Friday. The snow level will be 0-1500′ early, 3500′ mid-morning, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ after midnight. About 0.6” WE is forecast during the day for about 6” of medium density snow. Overnight, another 0.1” WE is forecast, but we’ll double that thanks to westerlies. 2” of additional snow will fall. Wind: SW 15-30 in the morning, W 35 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight.

Saturday looks lovely. Clear sky over low clouds (to 6000′) early gives way to partly cloudy sky in the afternoon and clear sky overnight. The free air freezing level will be 0′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind: W 25 early fades to light/variable in the afternoon and S 5-15 overnight. Sunday looks snowy to start but may switch to rain in the evening at 5000′. There’s quite a bit of model spread right now, so let’s hold off on making p-type predictions. It does look like the daytime will be snowy with light wind, so don’t write it off! For Monday, the weather will probably be warm and wet, but we’ll be back to snow by Tuesday!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. There’s a weekly group paddle to the Event Site on Sunday at 11 am followed by a free pint at the fire pit at Ferment. That’s the “Paddle n’ Pint”. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Well, now the trails are going to be frozen solid. That makes for good riding if you can avoid the invisible icy spots. On the off chance that things thaw later this week under sunny sky, don’t ride. Be prepared to turn around due to freeze-thaw mud. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
