Gorge Wind Forecast

This forecast is for Thursday and Friday, as I have to work super early on Friday morning. The weather is taking a U-turn towards autumn this week, and it seems it will stay that way for at least a week. Rain, cooler temps, unreliable and difficult-to-predict wind accompanies that shift in the seasons.

Thursday sees the approach of a weather system from the north. Weak offshore high pressure combines with weak desert low pressure in the afternoon for moderate but gusty westerlies. The day starts light and variable. A slow and steady build gives us 18-22 from Stevenson to Mosier and 22-26 from Lyle to Arlington this afternoon. Will the direction be good at Rufus? Unlikely. Will the wind be steady anywhere? Probably not. Will you be able to get on the water? Yes, if you want to! River flow is 103kcfs and temp is 63 degrees, exactly the same as the high temp prediction today.

Friday sees rain start up in the western Gorge around 9am and spread all the way to the Idaho border as a compact low moves right over the Willy Valley. That’ll really mess up your river plans! The wind will be entirely useless, but if you’re desperate, you’ll find gusty easterlies at 20-25 near Rooster Rock in the afternoon and drenching easterlies at 10-15 near Stevenson in the afternoon.

That system moves out of here on Saturday and high pressure quickly builds offshore. Models don’t quite agree on the forecast. Most likely we’ll have lingering showers in the western Gorge (to Mosier) until early afternoon. By mid-afternoon, we’ll go from light east wind to west wind at 12-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Maybe. Sunday looks like gusty 12-15 as another rainy system approaches and then rains on us starting midday.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 7-10. Friday: no. Saturday: no. Sauvie’s Thursday-Friday: no. Saturday: 14-17+. Coast (north/c central/south). Thursday: not at all, W swell 5′ at 14 seconds. Surfing! Friday: S 30-35/S 30-35, LTS, W 9′ @ 12. Saturday: 15-20/15-20/15-20, W 8′ @ 11.

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s October. I’m not sure how that happened already, but it did! Here in the Gorge, October is Happiness Month, where folks are encouraged to do three things that are scientifically proven to increase happiness. Those things, surprisingly, are not kiteboarding, windsurfing, and downwind paddle-anything, although those activities can help too!

The three simple, easy, no-expensive-gear-required things you can do are (drum roll)… 1) reflect on three things you are grateful for (like the ability to end sentences in prepositions); 2) perform a random act of kindness; 3) take a moment of silence to pray, meditate, reflect, drink a cup of tea, look at a sunset, or whatever. Just take a moment of silence.

These are simple things you can do. Give it a shot this month. Do these activities over your morning cup of coffee and see what sort of effect it has on your day. May you be happier. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I inspected Post Canyon on Wednesday (somebody’s got to do it!), and the dirt was dry but still fun. Get it now, because the quantity of rain we may receive on Friday could shut it down due to mud for a couple of days. Trails to the west of Hood River will receive even more rain, meaning more mud. The 44 Road tends to drain better and may be excellent for a short window on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

Upcoming Events

There’s free yoga at 8am at Flow. That’s followed by $5Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, community yoga at 6pm at Samadhi in White Salmon, and free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6. There’s Zumba at Mid-Valley elementary at 6:30. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. This Friday is First Friday in Hood River.
