Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Just enough snow has fallen this week to return the groom to a state of packed powder. If that’s what you’re after, get it today! We’ll transition towards hardpack over the next few days and then into a warmer, softer transitional snow as we head into Sunday and Monday.
Thursday starts off with fog and clouds down low and sun up high. Models suggest this pattern will continue today with periods of sunshine. High clouds move in overnight. The snow level will be 2500′ this morning, 3500′ this afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, variable to 10 in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 overnight.
Friday starts with high clouds, may turn clear, and then adds a bit of light snowfall or mixed precip in the afternoon and night. The snow level will be 6000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and overnight, temps will rise to 0F at 8000′. Just a trace to 0.1” precip is forecast, likely as a mix of precip types. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, W 35 midday, W 40 in the afternoon, and NW 20-30 overnight.
Saturday starts with a few orographic flurries or freezing drizzle down low with sunshine up high. Just a trace of precip is forecast. The slopes get full sun in the afternoon. The Snow level will be somewhere between 2500′ and 8000′ in the morning thanks to an isothermic environment. Afternoon: the free air freezing level will be 7500′ under clear sky. Overnight, the FAF rises to 8500′. Wind: NW 20-30 in the morning, NNE 15+ (possibility of stronger wind and warming down low due to downslope effects) in the afternoon, and E 10-15 overnight. Sunday will be sunny with the freezing level around 9000′. Models disagree on precip / no precip for Monday, so we’ll leave it here. Go get yourself some packed powder groom!
Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling
FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!
