Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!
SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! It’s Thursday, and today’s your best shot at consistent, reliable wind in the next week or so. Lighter easterlies are forecast Friday, light to moderate westerlies on Saturday, easterlies again on Sunday, and not much at all on Monday. Not much is forecast for the middle part of next week, but there’s some possibility of stronger westerlies Thursday and Friday. Call that low-probability for now!
Today, Thursday, kicked off windy in the Gorge, or windy in the western Gorge, anyway! Pressures were 30.32/30.45/30.49 for robust offshore gradients. Iwash/Rooster started the day with 35mph, and Stevenson and Viento were 22-25mph. We should see Stevenson, Viento, and Home Valley hold at 22-25mph into early afternoon before fading. At day’s end: 20-25mph at Iwash/Rooster Rock, 15-20mph at Stevenson, 15mph at Home Valley and Viento, and 10-15mph from Lyle eastward into the desert. River flow over the last 24 hours was 59-113kcfs, river temp is 63.3F, and high temp forecast is 72F and sunny.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Friday sees another round of easterlies, but they’ll be lesser easterlies. Early morning brings 25-30mph at Iwash/Rooster and 20-25mph at Viento, Stevenson, and Home Valley. After 2pm, the wind fades, landing at 10mph at Iwash Rock and 10-15mph at Stevenson after 2pm. High temp: 72 and partly high cloudy.
A weak weather system swings through Saturday and turns the wind westerly. Models are not excited about the potential – we’ll have under 15mph west of The Dalles all day. Eastern Gorge: Between Avery and Rufus, westerlies start the day at 19-22mph. After 11am, as this system moves inland, Stevenson to Avery all fall below 15mph while Rufus to Boardman rises to 19-22mph for a few hours. By late afternoon, the wind will be 11-14mph or less all through the Gorge. High temp: 66F in Hood River and 70F out in the desert.
Easterlies return on Sunday as high pressure rebuilds. If we’re lucky, they’ll peak at 25-30mph at Iwash and 25mph at Stevenson in the morning before fading. Monday’s forecast is currently for westerlies at 10mph or less. Tuesday through Thursday look pretty light unless something changes. Better chances for westerlies at 20mph+ are indicated next Friday and Saturday. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE
THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! What a nice start to the day – clear sky, sunshine, not too cold, no ICE storms here in the Gorge. Gotta love it! Generally speaking, the weather stays non-impactful for the next couple of weeks. When we talked last, we were all excited about rain next week. Sadly, the quantity of rain in next week’s forecast is way down in today’s forecast.
Know what’s up in today’s forecast? Not the morning temp in Glenwood – it was 31 there this morning. Frosty, yet again. Before you know it, it’ll be ice skating season there. But not this afternoon. Today looks downright awesome all through the Gorge: sunny with high temps from 71 to 74, warmest in The Dalles. East wind will be present for your commute to/from the city, and east wind will be present all day if you live near Stevenson: 30-35mph this morning near Iwash (NOT NOT NOT a rooster – it’s a dick) Rock and 25mph near Stevenson. Afternoon wind drops to 20-25mph near Iwash (still not a rooster) Rock and 15-20mph near Stevenson. East of Hood River and into South Wasco County, easterlies rise to 10-15mph this afternoon.
On Friday, we’ll have just enough high clouds all day long to make for a pretty sunrise and pretty sunset. Double your pleasure, double your fun! Morning temps: +/- 5 degrees from 40 degrees. Afternoon: 70-75. East wind in the morning: 25-30mph near Iwash (STILL not a rooster, never will be) Rock and 20-25mph between Stevenson and Viento. Afternoon: 10mph near Iwash (it’s a pen*s, people) Rock and 10-15mph near Cascade Locks. Sunset: lovely!
A weak weather system arrives Saturday morning with a little drizzle as far east as Hood River until 11am. Drizzle persists west of Viento until 2pm. There might be a few sprinkles near Arlington in the evening, but generally speaking, everyone east of Mosier stays bone dry (not “boner dry”) all day. Afternoon: partly cloudy with these highs: 63 in Stevenson, 66 in Hood River, 69 in The Dalles, and 73 in Pasco. The onshore temp gradient gives us 15-20mph west wind in the morning and 10-15mph west wind late in the afternoon into the evening.
Sunday looks partly high overcast with east wind at 25mph and temps right around 65 degrees. Monday: a weak nothing of a weather system with highs a couple degrees cooler. As we look deeper into next week, we see a couple chances for light rain, but way less rain than in the last forecast I wrote. I was hopeful that I could get some cover crops in, but I’m less hopeful now. Oh well. It’s going to be beautiful weather for simply living a life here in the Gorge, and that’s good enough for me! Safe travels. -TATAS
