Tuesday-Wednesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather forecast: warm and sunny until the weekend, when fall weather arrives…

Hi friends! It’s Tuesday, and your best chances to get on the river in the next week or so are Thursday (easterlies) and Saturday (westerlies). Other than those days, wind speeds likely remain in the “light” zone most of the time, although uncertainty is quite high for Sunday.

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Keep in mind that this forecast attempts to predict what the iKite/iWind sensors will read. Think like a local! All sensors are not equal. Swell reads low. Viento/Arlington/The Wall read high compared to Swell. 30mph at Rufus (The Wall sensor) is about 23-24mph at Swell. 30mph at Swell is about 35-37mph at Rufus/Viento/Arlington. Hope that helps!

SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! It’s Tuesday, and your best chances to get on the river in the next week or so are Thursday (easterlies) and Saturday (westerlies). Other than those days, wind speeds likely remain in the “light” zone most of the time, although uncertainty is quite high for Sunday.

Tuesday starts with pressures of 30.18/30.17/30.17 for weak onshore gradients. That’s about all we’ll see today: light westerlies under 10mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 64-83kcfs, river temp is 63.3F, and high temp forecast is 67F with mostly clear sky.

How to interpret the Euro Ensemble: this is 50 different initial conditions. If the colors are similar for a given day, forecast certainty is high. If the colors vary wildly, uncertainty is high and you should only use pencil on your calendar.

Wednesday doesn’t look much different – we might see a short period of westerlies at 10-13mph near Viento early in the morning, but the wind will stay at that range or, more likely, under 10mph all day long. High temp: 71 degrees and sunny.

On Thursday, a heat low sets up over western Oregon and reverses the wind direction. Easterlies peak at 25-30mph near Iwash Rock and 25mph near Stevenson and Viento and Home Valley for a few hours in the morning. Afternoon wind slowly fades. Stevenson, Viento, and Home Valley end the day at 15mph. Iwash/Rooster ends the day at 20mph. High temp: 72 degrees and sunny.

Easterlies linger at 20-25mph, max, for a few hours on Friday morning before an approaching weather system turns the wind calm or nearly calm. That weather system slides through on Saturday and gifts us a round of gusty westerlies. There’s some range in the predictions, so let me broad brush the forecast: under the clouds and in the sprinkles west of Mosier, you’ll find gusty upper teens. To the east of the low clouds, possibly in the Rowena area, but definitely east of The Dalles, you’re likely to encounter westerlies in the mid 20s. A few ensemble members call for stronger wind, but most are suggesting something in the 20-25mph range in the desert as your best home.

Models are all over the place on Sunday. Beyond that, cooler, not-very-wind weather appears to be in the cards. It appears that fall is slowly sliding towards winter. Have a great day, everyone. Hope to see you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! Y’all get out there and enjoy this sunny weather if you can. Models are suggesting a switch to wetter, cooler weather starting this weekend. Our friendly weather models are turning on the love with the potential for at least a bit of rain for many of us in the next two weeks. Yay!

Before we get into all that, let’s look at the temps. First, my garden didn’t frost this morning!!! Yay! Glenwood and Centerville dropped to 27 this morning. Hood River: 30-39. Upper Valley: 29-39. The Dalles: 31-41, coldest near Steele Road, of course. With the chilly temps and incoming rain, I’m thinking cover crops for the garden. Maybe you are too. Now is the time to get them in, and hopefully the rain will materialize and germinate them!

But it ain’t gonna rain today. Nope. We’ll have just a few clouds under mostly sunny sky with light west wind under 10mph. High temps: 66 in Stevenson, six-seven in Hood River, 71 in The Dalles, and 67 out in Pasco, where it was 30 degrees and frosty like a snowman this morning. Know what else is frosty? Or at least cold as ice? 80 hour a week work requirements and 6-month renew requirements for most people on Medicaid. This benefits none of us – people without health insurance end up 1) using emergency rooms (stressing the system and making everyone wait longer for care) and 2) end up in medical debt and 3) cost hospitals lots of money which leads to them shutting down. People without health insurance also die preventable deaths – working age folks who cannot access health insurance are 40% more likely to die a premature death than those with insurance.

Anyway, keep that in mind when you vote in a few weeks.

Overnight into Wednesday, we’ll have just a few clouds and light wind. Expect morning temps in the mid 30s to low 40s. Rest of Wednesday: 70-75 degrees with west wind under 10mph.

High pressure takes over on Thursday (as if the pressure wasn’t high enough already!) and gives us a brilliantly clear and sunny day. Morning temps: 35-45. Afternoon: 71-75. East wind morning forecast: 25-30mph near Iwash (NOT, NOT, NOT a rooster) Rock, Stevenson, and Viento. Afternoon: 20mph in the western Gorge and 10-15mph from The Dalles eastward including in South Wasco County. Friday looks very similar, but the east wind will die off in the afternoon as a weather system slated for Saturday approaches.

That one will bring a little rain. Quantities aren’t certain yet. Perhaps 0.25” in Stevenson and a trace in The Dalles and not much to the east? We’ll hone in on the details as we get closer. After that, the door is open for cooler, wetter weather. You may want to close your doors and fire up the heater – high temps will fall to 60 or less. Next rain is likely Tuesday and Thursday, when 85% of the Euro ensemble members call for 0.25” to 0.5” rain in Cascade Locks and a trace to 0.25” in The Dalles. See why I was talking about cover crops earlier? During this time period, temps at 850mb will stay well above 0C, meaning the snow level will stay above 5000′. No impacts are expect down here other than slippery roads as the summer stash of oil and grime is washed away. Safe travels. -TATAS
