Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! I hope you had a wonderful five days while I was off on retreat. I had five wonderful days, and it was also fabulous to get back on the river yesterday. We’ll all be on the river again today. After this, we all take a couple of rest days from windsports unless something changes dramatically in the forecast. Gusty westerlies return on Sunday. Monday’s up in the air thanks to significant instability. Models like the idea of an eastern Gorge day on Tuesday.

Let’s take a look at Thursday, shall we? Weak offshore high pressure combines with a weak heat low in the desert and instability above for a moderate day. Pressures started at 30.09/30.00/29.98 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.02. Models say… Corridor Day! Westerlies rise to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier by mid-morning. Stevenson won’t be too far behind. Get on it. Thanks to westside heating and instability, the wind will shift. Afternoon plans: 14-17 from Viento to Hood River with 19-22 at Stevenson and from Mosier to Doug’s. Models suggest that Mosier-Doug’s stretch could rise to 22-25 this evening. Rufus eventually climbs to 11-14, not enough to give you an excuse to head east for Indian food. Sad. River flow yesterday was 99-179kcfs, river temp is 71F, and high temp forecast is 87F.

Instability sticks around on Friday, and heat spreads farther west than we’d like. This drives wind speeds down into the “probably not enough” zone, unless you get out really early. Models hint at 13-16 from Viento to Swell for Dawn Patrol. Say “bye” real quick; the wind drops to 10-13 and hangs there from Stevenson to Swell or perhaps Hood river. Okay, a few of you might have big enough gear or a light enough body to make it happen. High temp: 87F.

The hottest weather shifts back to the east side on Saturday, and it’s joined by humidity and instability. Westerlies start at 8-11 from Stevenson to Swell and maybe, just maybe, make it as high as 12-15 (Stevenson to Mosier) in the afternoon. Instability won’t help our cause. Marginal day, for sure.

Looking at the extended forecast… models hint at gusty 20-24 on Sunday, but there’s not a great deal of confidence yet. Models are all over the place on Monday, and they also have significant instability in the afternoon. Tuesday: looks the best of all the days – mid to upper 20’s – but you’re probably driving east of The Dalles. Consider it an opportunity for … Amayah’s Indian food! Have a great day on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
