Gorge Wind Forecast

A trough of low pressure along the coast is combining with a weak high pressure area in the desert for an easterly gradient across the Cascades on this Thursday morning. We’ll see east wind at 20-25 at Rooster and perhaps 15-20 near Cascade Locks by mid-morning. The wind will quickly fade and go calm on Thursday afternoon.

Friday starts off with strong high pressure in the Pacific and a frontal system approaching from the northwest. This will start the day with westerlies at 10-13 or a touch more through the entire Gorge. As that front moves closer in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 24-28. The steadiest, longest-lasting wind will likely be at Stevenson. Other locations to visit for the strongest, longest-lasting wind are Doug’s, Avery, and Rufus, but you’ll find periods of strong wind midday for a couple hours at pretty much any location.

Clouds and showers move into the western Gorge in the wee hours of Saturday morning. That will shift the wind eastward. For Saturday morning, we’ll have 10-13 or so pretty much everywhere. As the front moves through midday, the wind will pick up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Rowena and gusty 25-29 from Avery to Arlington.

The forecast for Sunday currently shows very strong high pressure offshore, weak low pressure in the desert, and showers in the western Gorge. This is one of those low-accuracy situations for the GFS model. I think we’ll end up with 15-18 east of the low clouds, but let’s wait a day or two and see how the GFS responds then.

Random Morning Thoughts

Every once in a while, we come across something that, to us, is perfect. This is rare. Most of the time, with our partners, our jobs, our living situation, we find things to like or dislike. Because of the way our brains are wired (for protection and survival), we are more likely to notice the things we perceive as threatening, unhelpful, or unpleasant.

While working to change the unpleasantries that we have the power to change, we can address our level of discomfort in the present by directing our mind’s attention. Our innate tendency is to focus on the things that frustrate us, but we can choose to focus on and revel in the things that are good. We can even use our ruminating on negatives as a cue to focus on the positives.

This can alleviate, or at least moderate, distress in the moment, but it also has long-term impacts. Nudging our brains into a more pleasant, happy pattern will encourage our brains to run that program more frequently without our input. In addition, we’ll slowly train our mind to focus more attention on positive things, rather than negative things.

I say “slowly” because this is a long process. But here’s the thing: you can spend a few minutes a day playing around with this in the hope of less suffering long-term, or you can stay in your status quo. You might as well give it a shot, right? The mind is trainable. You can suffer less if you train it. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder that many of the trails above 8-Track in Post Canyon are closed. There will be heavy equipment in the closed areas over the next few weeks, so please stay out. The Sheriff and county forest employees are quite frustrated with all the riding happening on closed trails. If the fear of authority doesn’t motivate you, please think about a tree falling on your head. Perhaps that will keep you out of there! If you are wondering what to ride that’s open, consider Seven Streams to 8-Track to Bad Motor Scooter to GP-Float On-Kleeway. Or consider Whoopdee-Ronnoc or Hospital Hill, both of which are very much open. Kitchen Sink is also open, and all Hood River County lands have reopened for motorized use.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out. Other regularly scheduled events include $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30, by-donation yoga at Samadhi at 6pm, and free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee run, where jogging or walking 4 miles will get you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
