Gorge Wind Forecast

Attention: there is a Hatchery cleanup on Saturday from 9am-noon. Forecast: A couple of days of back-and-forth wind give way to a few days of strong easterlies starting Saturday. For Thursday, expect a short burst of light easterlies this morning (maybe up to 10-15 near Rooster) before a switch to light westerlies (5mph or so) this afternoon. River flow is 122kcfs and temp is 51 degrees. Friday sees a weak weather system drop in from the NE. This sets up cold high pressure east of the Cascades, switching the wind to easterly. The day starts with W 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River. Midday brings calm wind, and then the easterlies pick up to 20-25 near Rooster and Stevenson and 10-15 all the way to Arlington.

A deep cold pool on Saturday allows some of the easterlies to spill over the top of the Cascades. We’ll probably see easterlies at 30-35 from Rooster to Stevenson with 20-25 near Viento. The depth of the cold pool decreases on Sunday, for easterlies at 50-55 near Rooster, fading to 25-30 in the afternoon.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Yesterday’s forecast really missed the mark on the rainbows – there ended up being a 100% chance of rainbows. Live and learn! Thursday will be partly cloudy. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Friday looks cloudy. Sprinkles are possible to the north and east of Hood River. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light west wind turns to moderate east wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Saturday brings in cold air from the east. Models seem to think the air will be dry enough for clear sky. We will see! The current numerical forecast has us at 37 in the morning, but 27 is probably more likely. Temps will warm into the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Strong east wind. No rainbows. Ditto on Sunday.
