Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Timberline remains the only game in town right now, but Meadows is making noise about possibly opening this weekend. Their website will have the latest updates. To be honest, there’s not a lot of snow in the forecast, especially the extended forecast, but let’s all cross our fingers and do whatever we do to ask the universe for snow (but not at sea level, please!).

For Thursday, the mountain will start off cloudy and turn snowy around midday. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 2500′ midday, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ overnight. About .1-.2” water value (WV) will fall in the afternoon, followed by another .1-.2” overnight. That’ll add 2-4” of snow to the snowpack. Wind will be SW 10-15 early, WSW 20-30 midday, and W 20 overnight. It’s possible the overnight westerly wind will enhance the snowfall rate and give us an extra couple inches.

Friday currently looks clear in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon with cloudy weather overnight. A weather system passing to the north of the Columbia has the wrong trajectory for snow on Mt. Hood, sadly. The free air freezing level friday will be 2500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Wind will be W 15 in the morning and SW 15-20 from mid-afternoon on.

Moderate snowfall is in the forecast for Saturday, all day and all night. The snow level will be 3000′ early and 1500-2000′ in the afternoon and evening. We’re currently looking at .2” WV during the day, for 2-3” of fluffy snow, and another .3” overnight, for 3-4” of fluffy powder. Wind will be SW 15 early, SW 20 midday, SW 10 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. The westerly wind will turn NW on Monday morning, adding a few more inches of snow from orographic enhancement. After Monday morning, the forecast is dry through at least the following Sunday, with mountain temps climbing well above freezing due to a massive inversion.

Random Morning Thoughts

We humans like to understand our environment and our relationships with others. We want to be able to predict people’s actions – this is a survival mechanism. Because of this, our brain creates stories. I noticed this come up recently in my work. I had created a story that a client always responded in a certain way when we touched upon certain things.

Upon further exploration, it turned out this had only happened once! Whoa. Seems unlikely, right, but this is what our minds do. They create stories to explain situations we don’t understand.

By being aware of this dynamic, we can remain open to and curious about other possibilities. We can be on guard for our own mental stories about others, especially stories that have a person doing something “all the time” or “every time”.

Why should we care? Because we want to relate to people, not the stories we create about them. If we can set aside our stories and be with people in the moment, we can connect with them on a deeper level, and they can connect to us on a deeper level. As a result, we’ll see and be seen, and that feels good. That’s real. It’s also awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

I took a couple Moab laps on Syncline yesterday, and Moab is good. The doubletrack is pretty muddy. SAD! If it’s muddy there, it’s too muddy to ride anywhere else, and you will damage the trails if you do so. You can give back to the trails by going to the HRATS fundraiser at Double Mountain on the 14th.

Upcoming Events

Hood River’s annual tree lighting ceremony is Friday, and as an added bonus, Hood River will have a menorah lighting too! Hooray! HAPPY! For Thursday there’s $5 Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. There’s free yoga at Samadhi at 6pm. There’s free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. Friday morning at 7am, it’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Looking long range, the Meadows Avalanche Dog Fundraiser is December 7th at Double Mountain, and the HRATS annual fundraiser is the 14th, also at Double Mountain.
