Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I keep saying that the forecast is all over the place, and today is no exception to that pattern. It’s Thursday, by the way. We’ve gone from a dry long-range forecast to a wet and snowy long-range forecast. Goodness.

For Thursday, Mt. Hood will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be 13,000′ with max 5000′ temps near 50 degrees. Wind will be light and variable in the morning and W 10-15 in the afternoon. Friday starts off clear and quickly turns cloudy. Light snowfall starts up around noon. The snow level will be 12,000′ before dawn, 4000′ when the snow starts, and 500′ after midnight. We’ll see about .2” water value (WV) before sunset, for a couple inches of snow. Another inch or so falls overnight. Widn will be W 20 in the morning and NW 30 in the afternoon, which will impact lifts above treeline.

Saturday starts off clear and quickly turns cloudy with scattered flurries. The snow level will be 500′ in the morning, 1500′ ‘in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Just a trace of snow will fall during the day as the bulk of the precip passes north of the Columbia. Wind will be NW 25 all day, again impacting lifts above treeline.

Sunday’s a tricky forecast. Upper elevation air will be warm, possibly warm enough for rain, but possibly just cold enough for wet snow as 8000′ temps hover just above freezing. For now, I’m leaning towards rain, but that could change. So… Sunday starts off cloudy. Precipitation increases in the afternoon and overnight due to orographic (terrain-enhanced) effects. The snow level will be 8000’ish during the day, 6500′ in the afternoon and evening, and 5000’ on Monday morning. We’ll probably see about 1” of rain on Sunday night, but there will likely be wet snow mixed in, given the temp profile. Wind will be NW 15 early, WNW 25 in the afternoon, and W 30 in the evening, again impacting lift operations, which really won’t matter much if it’s raining! Looking long-range, the GFS has very heavy snowfall on Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

One time when I was feeling pretty depressed a therapist told me, “Go watch something funny.” At the time, I was annoyed, because it seemed like strite advice. After further contemplation, I think that’s good advice, and I’d add something else: “Go watch something that inspires you.”

I stumbled across the Sony Bravia bouncing ball advertisement this morning in my search for images of bouncing balls to describe the recent behavior of the weather models. (No, I’d never seen the ad before – not much time for TV watching!) I was delighted. After watching that video and the video about the making of the advertisement, I feel happy and inspired.

I have no idea what inspires or entertains or moves you. But I can tell you that if you can find something on the vast internet that engages you fully, you can shift your mood into something bigger, fuller, and more lively. Have an awesome day little bouncing ball!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Thursday, we’ll have east wind near Rooster Rock at 50-60mph all day. Stevenson will have 30-35 and Viento will have 25-30. Friday starts with easterlies at 15-20, goes calm after dawn, and turns to W 18-22 between Stevenson and The Dalles after 1pm. Saturday looks like W 10-13 all day long.

Gorge Weather Forecast

You can expect Nothing today with the temperature stuck at 33 degrees all day long. East wind. No rainbows. For Friday, we’ll start with Nothing and go to light freezing rain for a short period between 10am and noon. After that, the temp will jump from 31 to the mid-40’s, and the wind will go from east to west. Saturday starts off with partly cloudy sky and icy roads. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon with a few sprinkles during the day. West wind. 78% chance of rainbows. The long-range forecast, in contrast to yesterday’s dry forecast, calls for two strong, wet weather systems to hit the PNW on Tuesday and Wednesday.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Even though we have the Nothing, you’ll want to stay away from trails exposed to open air – they’ll still thaw, leaving your bike coated in mud and your tracks damaging the trails. I do have a report that Post Canyon is frozen solid and rideable. The HRATS have a fundraiser on the 14th at Double Mountain. If you decide to road ride or gravel grind, watch out for icy areas in the fog zone. Speaking of mixed surfaces, the Cold Lap is at 3pm at Dirty Fingers every Saturday.

Upcoming Events

It’s Thursday. There’s community Tai Chi for $5 at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30. At 6pm, there’s community yoga (by donation) at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6pm. There’s community Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. Tonight is the HRATS fundraiser at Double Mountain from 6pm to 10pm. Saturday is the Locals Only Sale at Big Winds, with screaming deals on lots of gear.
