Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday, and it’s looking like it’ll be a windy day today. That said, instability in the atmosphere could have a detrimental affect on wind quality today. Looking at the next couple of days, Friday looks like a solidly windy day. Models then disagree on Saturday and Sunday, both between the models and from run to run.

So, for Thursday, we have marine clouds in Portland, and a .13 gradient + .03 out east. This is a good start, with the caveat that the mountain cams are showing developing convection. For the early morning, we’ll have 17-21 from Viento to the Hatchery, and probably at Mosier too. Other locations will be in the 10-13 range. The wind should build to gusty 24-28 today from Stevenson to Avery with 10-13 east of there, potentially pick up east of Avery late in the evening. Given the atmospheric instability, beaches near Swell may give a sub-par performance, especially this afternoon. River flow is 137kcfs, and temp is 71 degrees.

Atmospheric instability shifts to the far eastern Gorge on Friday. Combine this with a strong marine push for a good chance of a good day. We start with 24-27 from Viento to Mosier and end up with 27-31 from Stevenson to Rufus. Roosevelt will likely stay in the 20-23 or less range.

Significant disagreement exists in Saturday’s forecast; the GFS likes 14-17, and the Euro likes 21-24. Sunday’s forecast has been bouncing around. Yesterday we had no wind. Today we have 15-18 out of the west. So, no forecast for Sunday yet.

BONUS: Jones Thursday: 23-26. Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 19-22. Sauvie’s Thursday: 14-17. Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 17-20. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: 5-10/10-15/20-25, W swell 6′ at 11 seconds. Friday: 5-10/10-15/25-30+, NW 5′ @ 8. Saturday: 15-20/15-20/25-30+, NW 5′ @ 8.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine texted me this morning saying she’s feeling a bit “under the weather”. As I looked out the window, I can see the reason why; it’s not pretty. I too have been feeling crappy. I’m guessing that both of us are having a reaction to the smoke. She’s interpreting it as allergies, and I’m interpreting it as being depressed.

My point is that, to some extent, we construct and create our own reality. Once we have created an underlying story, we start a proliferation of thoughts around it. “I’m sick so I should…” or “I’m depressed and therefore I can’t…”

If we can look past the words we’ve created and connect with the underlying reality, we can understand what’s really going on. Then we can reduce our distress by peeling away the layers we’ve created. For example, the smoke makes me feel trapped because it limits my activity options. I want things to be different than they are, which is a sure-fire recipe for unhappiness. (just ran outside) And now I’m happy because there are ginormous raindrops falling from the sky!

The trick is to stop creating stories based on past experience. This allows us to get closer to what’s really happening for us right here and now. May you be free from suffering. Have an awesome day.
