Gorge Wind Forecast

A series of weather systems moving along the coast and into the inland Northwest will drive gusty westerlies and easterlies over the next few days. What wind we do have will be accompanied by periods of rain, mostly in the western Gorge, but also extending periodically all the way to Idaho.

Thursday starts out with east wind as a compact low off the northern California coast drops the offshore pressure gradients. This low starts to move inland this afternoon. Gradients turn onshore in response, driving westerlies. We should see westerlies after 10am at 5-8 from Stevenson to Hood River. In the afternoon, the wind picks up to gusty 20-23 from Rowena to Arlington with 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier. River flow is 334kcfs, the upper edge for the Rufus stretch, and river temp is 55 degrees.

Friday looks like a windy day as inland low pressure combines with a higher pressure trough of low pressure (I know, it’s complicated!) off the coast. Ideal, this setup is not, but it should be enough for strong westerlies. The day starts with gusty 12-15 in the west under cloudy sky. Mosier to Arlington start with gusty 22-26. By late morning, we’ll see the wind build to gusty 27-32 from Rowena to Boardman. Strongest wind will last longest east of Rufus on Friday, and again, I’d like to stress “gusty”.

Saturday sees another low pressure system set up offshore. This turns the wind around and sets up widespread easterlies. Morning wind looks like 10-15 at Rooster and Stevenson. By late morning or early afternoon, Rooster drops off, Stevenson holds, and areas from Hood River eastward see 10-15+ out of the east, making for a fun opportunity for a downwind/downcurrent paddle. Sunday’s forecast currently looks like gusty 12-15 out of the west.

Road and Mountain Biking

First, this week is National Bike to Work Week! Falls Creek is rideable, but there is some snow (unclear how much) if you ride from the pass. An out and back from the bottom is a better bet. Dog River is open. Other 44 Road trails are not. Nestor is open. With about 0.2” of rain in the last 24 hours, Post is likely to be a combination of slick, tacky, and dry spots. Remember that there is a race in Post on Saturday the 18th.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. There is a parking area 0.5 miles farther down the road. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
