Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Thursday morning, and temps are already rising into the rain zone on Mt. Hood. We’ll see a switch back to snow late Thursday night, a little snow on Friday along with a lot of sun, and high overcast weather for at least the start of the weekend. Models are leaning towards significant moisture sometime Sunday into Monday, but there’s not enough clarity yet for a forecast. Speaking of forecasts, I’ll probably do Friday’s forecast tonight as I’m on call tonight through Friday night.

Thursday is starting off with mixed precip on our Mt. Hood ski slopes. It’s been a while since we saw anything other than snow! The snow level will be 5500′ this morning, 6500′ this afternoon, and 4500′ overnight. The bulk of the precip will arrive before the switch back to snow; we’ll see 0.3” water equivalent (WE) mixed precip this morning, 0.5” rain this evening, and 0.1” to 0.2” WE snow overnight for up to a couple inches of wet snow atop a saturated base. Those numbers are for 5000′. Above 7000′, significant snow will accumulate. Wind: SW or S or SSW 20-30 for the 24 hour period.

Friday starts with light snow and turns clear in the afternoon. High clouds stream in overnight. The snow level will be 4500′ early in the day, 2500′ mid-morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast before mid-morning, for 1-2” new snow. Wind: SW 15-30 in the morning, WSW 20-30 in the afternoon, and SW 15-25 overnight.

Saturday will be dry all day. Sun in the morning quickly adds some clouds due to instability. High clouds move in overnight. The free air freezing level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and will climb towards 8000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SW 10-20 for the 24 hour period. Models start Sunday off high overcast and muggy as the PNW taps into tropical moisture. It’s unclear when or how much or what type of precipitation will move in. It could arrive sometime Sunday. It could wait until Monday. Since there’s so much uncertainty, let’s leave this here for now. Have a great day!

Gorge Wind Forecast

A progressive weather pattern gives us a variety of wind outcomes over the next few days. Thursday morning brings easterlies at 25-30 at Rooster, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15-20 at Viento. Afternoon wind drops to 15mph at all three and picks up to E 5-10 east of The Dalles. Only one river flow reading (those websites are fluky): 83kcfs. River temps: 45F. High temp forecast: 53F. Friday starts out calm. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 24-28 from Lyle to Arlington. West of there, the wind will be in the gusty 11-15 range. You should have sun with your eastern Gorge westerlies. High temp: 56F. Saturday looks calm with high temps in the upper 50’s. Sunday’s weather is still a bit up in the air, so let’s leave the forecast for now.

Cycling

Cows are going in soon on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. On to trails… It’s muddy – we got over half an inch of rain on Tuesday. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
