Saturday. 8/17. Gorge wind, events, and chanterelles.

This is Temira.
This is Temira!

Thank you all for your donations and kind words during last month’s pledge drive. Whew. Glad that’s over. I always feel a little weird asking for donations. That said, should you like to get on the daily email list (where you can occasionally win cool stuff), please take the time to click on the sun below and make a donation of $12 or more. That gets you a year’s subscription, and it makes me smile, because I know then that the hard work I put into this is worth a lot to you. Thank you for reading my work, and thank you for donating. I woke up this morning to rain. Blessed rain. Being a weather dork, I looked at the radar image. Bizarre – just one very thin band of weak thunderstorms, probably right on the frontal boundary, running SW-NE across the Cascades, with Hood River directly in line. Hopefully Post Canyon and Kitchen Sink are under that rain line, because the riding is going to be amazing with another .05” (we already have .05”). You know what else is under that band of rain? My garden! No dragging the hose today!

I did not see any chanterelles while I was riding my bike yesterday, but I know where you can find some: Celilo restaurant has 50lbs in the fridge. I bet you can order chanterelles for dinner tonight.

Wind forecast guess paragraphs

Yesterday morning’s weather surprise really made my day. Rain. In August. Pure awesome in my world. Today, though, we’re back to partly cloudy sky with sunshine, as an offshore low pressure system continues affecting our weather.

There are some low clouds in Portland this morning, and we did have .06/.05 gradient at 8am (yes, I slept in. way in.). Still, we’ll just have west wind in the 10-15 range this morning. Expect the wind to build slowly today, strongest from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. As a weather system approaches this afternoon, the wind will pick up to 23-26, likely strongest at Steven’s Locks, Mosier, the Event Site and the Doug’s stretch of the river, with gustier conditions likely at the Hatch and less wind further east of The Dalles.

Tomorrow sees the offshore low continuing to influence our weather. Expect 15-18 all morning, picking up to 17-21 in the afternoon, maybe a bit more, as Pacific high pressure slowly moves into position.

Monday looks like another slow start, but a combination of positive factors send the wind into the 23-26 range in the afternoon. On the coast Monday and Tuesday, expect 20-25+ with a 5′ swell at 10 seconds.

Wind forecast guess paragraphs

It’s difficult forecasting with such a strange band of clouds and slow-moving frontal boundary coupled with an offshore low. Honestly, this is very similar to trying to predict west wind in the winter – danged tough.

That said, call lit 5-10 this morning from Steven’s Locks to Mosier. As the frontal boundary slides east (slowly), this afternoon, the wind will pick up to 15-18 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Expect it to be up-and-down and a bit unreliable.

Things look better tomorrow – we start with a deeper marine layer, departing low, and building high pressure off the California coast. That should give us 17-21 to start from Hood River to Mosier (with Steven’s Locks likely in the marine clouds). As the day goes on, the wind picks up to 23-26 (maybe briefly more, late) from the Hatchery to Doug’s. Best wind should be mid-afternoon.

Sunday starts with 13-15 and builds to 22-25. And the wind continues every day through the extended forecast…

The Tasar World Championships continue at Cascade Locks today. And the Skamania County Fair continues on the other side of the river – for you runners and walkers, there’s a 5k race there tomorrow at 8am.

If you’re around this weekend, head on down to Hood River’s Waterfront Park for the Naish Paddle Challenge. There are free SUP demos from 10-4 on Saturday and 10-2 on Sunday, except during the races, when there won’t be demos. If you’ve never done standup paddling, don’t worry – there are free clinics and lessons too.

On Saturday, down at the Hood River Yacht Club at the marina, there’s a gear sale of some sort presented by Stone’s Sports. The flier had no time and no details, so it’s a surprise sale. Go down and check it out. Speaking of sales, for you pole boarders, Big Winds has a few 2010 Starboard Quad boards in various constructions, brand new. I ride the 71L, and it is the best Gorge board ever. Flat, fast, and still super turny. They’re $795, which seems like a fine deal to me. I wouldn’t mention it, except I’m so in love with the 71L that I bought two last year. Maybe you’ll like it too?

Have an awesome day today!
