It’s hard to stay in the flow when bike riding if you have to keep stopping and looking for Chanterelles.

Wind forecast

Looks like the weather will get wild today, as an offshore low moves inland this afternoon, causing locally heavy rain and the possibility of thunderstorms.

We’ll see west wind at 18-22 this morning near Hood River, picking up to gusty 30-40 sometime after 2pm from Hood River east to Arlington. This wind accompanies the eastward transit of an upper level low, so expect gusty conditions, up-and-down conditions, rain, lightning, and generally unreliable wind. That said, pack your car and be ready to move when the wind picks up (if 30-40 is what you’re after), because it’s not going to last long.

The offshore low lingers east of the Cascade Crest tomorrow, for continued shower/lightning potential. At least this gives us a better wind setup: high pressure in the Pacific combines with that eastward-moving low for a good gradient across the Gorge. Wind tomororow should be in the up-and-down 23-26 range from Hood River east.

At this point, Saturday looks relatively light – call it west wind at 10-15 or so. Sunday looks windier: 21-24 in the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday currently look like light starts with mid to upper teens in the afternoon.

Other Gorge News

Tonight in bike world, it’s the weekly Post n’ Pint bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, followed by the Smuggler’s Ball, a going away party for local rider Gato. If you’d like to come to the party, you must be wearing a spandex outfit of some sort. Will all the ski racers, bikers, and Jazzercise instructors on this list, there must be plenty of spandex in this town. If you don’t have any, borrow some and come wish Gato goodbye.

Tomorrow is the start of the weekend with First Friday in Hood River. Also tomorrow, CGWA has the Gorge windsurfing awards at Springhouse Cellars from 6-10, accompanied by a couple of movie premieres. Tomorrow’s also the start of Pacific Crest Trail Days in Cascade Locks, where you can check out the latest outdoor products and gear and take classes, and if you want, you can camp out on Thunder Island for the weekend.

Also this wekeend, it’s the last race of the Oregon Enduro Series, happening at Timberline, Skibowl, and Sandy Ridge – Sandy’s on Saturday, so don’t ride there that day. Good luck to all the local racers, especially the fabulous Dirty Harlots. Closer to town on Sunday, it’s the Rural Rampage kids n’ parents bike race, benefiting the Hood River School District.

Wind forecast

That pesky offshore low is still doing its dreaded upper level low thing off the Oregon coast today, meaning this pretty-looking setup of clouds in Portland and sunshine in the desert is nothing more than a pretty gloss over an ugly picture. We do have .08 gradient again this morning, so you can expect 15-18 this morning near Hood River, picking up to 18-22 midday from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles. Late in the afternoon, say, after 5pm, there’s a chance of 22-25 at Steven’s Locks and Doug’s, as the low starts moving inland.

Tomorrow presents an interesting weather setup. As that offshore low moves inland in the afternoon and high pressure builds behind it, we’ll see a super-sized pressure gradient across the gorge. However, daytime heating coupled with cold air aloft is going to fire off thunderstorms, especially out in the desert. In addition, there’s a lot of precipitable water associated with this system. You know how your kid/dog/tarantula is in the 99th percentile for intelligence? Well, this system is in the 99th percentile for moisture for this time of year. We’re going to see some rain. It’s going to be showery and spotty in coverage, but where it does rain, it’s going to be very heavy rain.

All that said, expect nuking wind, rain, and thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon after a 17-20 start to the day. My best suggestion would be to stay in the western Gorge, as the thunderstorms are more likely out east. Maryhill? Maybe you’ll be able to get that far east. Hard to say.

Friday sees high pressure off the coast and low pressure in the desert, for westerlies in the mid-twenties. Saturday and Sunday currently look like light starts with mid to upper teens in the afternoon.

In events tonight, there’s the women’s Post n’ Pinot mountain bike ride (5:30 at Dirty), sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina, Pickup Ultimate at Wy’East Middle School (6pm) and pickup rugby at Henkle Middle School (5:30). There’s also Karma yoga (free or by donation) at Flow at 4pm, and the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle at Husum (5:30). Oh, and I almost forgot summer Tai Chi and Qi Gong at Wilson Park at 6 and 5:30, respectively. I believe this is still going on… maybe I’ll have to go and check…

Coming up tomorrow night, it’s the weekly Post n’ Pint mountain bike ride, leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30. This week’s ride is even more special – if you’re coming, you must wear spandex, as it’s a going away party for spandex-wearing tech guru shop groupie Andrew, aka, Gato. Stay after the ride for a spandex party. There will be a bouncer, so don’t even try to get in without a full spandex outfit of some sort.

Coming up this weekend, Hood River Community Ed has the Rural Rampage, an adventure bike race for kids and parents. All proceeds benefit programs in the Hood River School District. If you can figure out how to sign up online, you deserve a prize. I googled and googled and just ended up googly eyed. In other bike news this weekend, it’s the final race of the Oregon Enduro Series, happening at Sandy Ridge, where our local girls are vying for the team title. Go Dirty Harlots!

Also this weekend, there’s a Civil War Encampment at the Ft. Dalles Musuem, it’s First Friday in Hood River, Pacific Crest Trail Days in Cascade Locks, and the CGWA windsurfing awards on Friday night at Springhouse, with a couple of poleboarding movie premieres.

Finally, September is the Bicycle Transportation Alliance’s annual Bike Commute Challenge. Ride your damned bike to work, people. It’s also Trails Month in Cascade Locks, so get down there and do some biking or hiking, and remember, the Gorge 400 is open to bikes.
