Wednesday. 9/11. Gorge wind. Events. Bridges and heat.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – nobody but you pays me to do this. So why is it here? This forecast started as a way for me to find better wind in the summer and better snow in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you too (almost) every day. Donate to keep it going! Make a $12 or larger donation by clicking on the sun and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Random Morning Thoughts
It’s going to be hot again today, with highs in the mid nineties. I believe that qualifies as “damned hot”, especially for September. Today’s record high, in case you were wondering, is 95. You can watch the Hood River Weather website to see if we break that record.

Wind forecast

You wind sports people can escape this blistering heat by heading to Stevenson or Rooster for east wind at 21-24 midday. The rest of the Gorge will see a slow build to E 5-10. Tomorrow brings light east wind all day, switching to light west late in the evening. Clouds start filtering into Portland on Friday morning, for west wind at 17-21. Saturday looks light, but if the models are correct about Sunday, it’ll be a west wind nuker. I have officially cleared my schedule.

The coast sees S 10-15 today with W 4’@13, light wind tomorrow with W 5@13, and N 10-15 Thursday afternoon with NW 3@10. It does not look like Jones Beach will be windy in the next few days, but it may be cooler than the Gorge.

Stuff happening tonight

It’s a busy night here in the Gorge, but these busy Wednesdays won’t last much longer as we start losing daylight. You can still go whitewater kayaking at 5:30 at Husum, ride bikes with the gals at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, and go sailboat racing at the Hood River Marina. There’s also Karma Yoga, free or by donation, at Flow at 4pm. The Caddyshack Classic is today – just a reminder for those unlucky enough to have been invited.

Stuff happening soon, but not tonight

Coming up this weekend, Ranger Jimmy T has a work party to finish the trail connecting Knebal Springs and Surveyor’s Ridge. Oh f**k yeah! This means that if you want to shuttle from High Prairie, you will have 25-30 miles of singletrack on your way to the Sawtooth Pub (where you should say hello to my good friend Derrick and his lovely lady Bri, if they are working). If you use the 44 Road trails, please mark your calendar and make plans to attend this work party. Meet at Dirty Fingers at 8:30 or Little John at 9. Bring a bike, boots, and a helmet of some sort. HRATS will have tools, although you could bring a garden rake if you have one.

Also this weekend, there’s the Double Cross cyclocross race in Hood River both days, there’s the Cascade to Crown Bike ride in Cascade Locks Sunday (10-62 miles) and there’s the Twin Tunnels 3k, 5k, and 10k running race, benefiting the Mosier School.

If that’s not enough, the Bridge of the Gods is closed to cars from 10-11 on Sunday so you, yes you, can walk across it courtesy of the Port of Cascade Locks. The Port of Hood River would never do anything so cool, would they? Uh huh. I didn’t think so. But remember, there are no toll-takers on Christmas, so you could attempt to walk/bike/drive-back-and-forth across the bridge all day December 25th. Now if only they’d do it for the 8 days of Chanukah too…

Have an awesome day today!

90+ degrees. In September. Sheesh.

Wind forecast

It’s going to get hot today and stay that way for several days, so break out your SUP board or your kayak, or just your tanning oil, and enjoy the extended summer. This is your chance to get rid of those spandex tan lines. We’ll have east wind for a couple of days too – It’ll be 17-21 at Stevenson and Rooster Rock today, with 5-10 elsewhere. Tomorrow brings 23-26 at Stevenson and Rooster. Thursday looks light. Next chance for a *big* west wind day is Monday.

Stuff happening tonight

For your workout tonight, join the Columbia Gorge Triathlon Club for a 500 yard swim, 7 mile bike ride, and a 2 mile run. Apparently it’s still up in the air whether it’s going to be at Mayer Park or the Event Site. Check the Facebook page if you’re interested in giving it a shot.

If you like food and/or parties, tonight brings double the fun: Ruins Tuesday at Springhouse, where $3 keeps you safe, and $12 Prime Rib (with fries) at Cebu Lounge.

Stuff happening soon, but not tonight

This upcoming weekend is a busy one for cyclists: Hood River hosts the Doublecross race at the high school both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Cascade Locks celebrates the opening of another section of the Historic Columbia River Highway Trail, and they also host the Cascade to Crown bike ride with routes of 10 to 62 miles on Sunday. Back to the HCRHT: if you ride to Troutdale and back from Wyeth, you will never be on the freeway. You’ll ride almost 80 miles with 5500′ of climbing. Pretty sweet. And speaking of Wyeth, you can always ride the Gorge 400 on your mountain bike…

In dirt world, our Barlow District Ranger, Jimmy T, has a work party on the SuperConnector trail on Saturday – if you’d like to join, meet at Little John Snowpark at 9am. That trail will link Knebal Springs to Surveyor’s – no more riding on the road. So, be there. Show your support for Jimmy T and his awesome grand master plan for the Barlow District. Meet at 9 at Little John or 8:30 at Dirty Fingers.

People preferring to use their own two feet rather than manufactured wheels (why, I don’t understand – wheels are more efficient) can support the Mosier School by joining the Twin Tunnels Run at 8am at the west end of the Twin Tunnels Trailhead on Sunday. You can run 3k, 5k, or 10k.

Have an awesome day today!
