Random Morning Thoughts

To all the people who’ve asked: No, there isn’t enough snow to hike and ski at Meadows yet.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

There’s really not much to talk about in the wind department, other than the fact that I’m desperate for the elusive “One Last Session”. It looks unlikely to happen this week, especially given the pervasive fog layer, also known as “The Nothing”, or “The Thing that Lives in the Gorge”.

Expect west wind at 13-15 this afternoon as a front approaches. A building ridge tomorrow afternoon should give us westerlies at 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles, after the fog burns off. As that high pressure ridge moves on Friday, the wind switches directions, going to E 17-21.

Plain old weather

It appears that today’s rain will start after 2pm, likely around 5pm. No more rain until Sunday. Hip-hip-hooray! In general weather news, the soaked ground will likely lead to some level of Nothing over the next couple of days. Should that be the case, you can head north, south, west, or up to escape the gloom.

The snow level today will be 5500′ early and 4500′ late, with a few inches more snow at 5000′. The freezing level will be 4500′ tomorrow morning, rising to 6500′ in the afternoon. On Friday, the freezing level rises to 10,000′ in the afternoon. Sunday brings the next system. With that one, the snow level will start at 10,000′ and fall to 6000′ after the bulk of the precipitation has passed.

More random TeMIra chatter

I’ve changed my mind: both Washington and Oregon suck. Neither state managed to provide a working health care exchange by the October 1st deadline. Shame on the both of you. Shame on this country – I’m tired of seeing my self-employed friends living in terror of sickness and bankruptcy. (FYI, you can contact certified agents who will go over the plans with you.)

In other political news, while American elected representatives were arguing like third graders, Pope Franics said, speaking randomly, “We need to give hope to young people, help the aged and open ourselves toward the future and spread love.”

And while the Pope became the world’s most important and well-recognized hippie, Al Jazeera English reamed the American media for being too apolitical regarding the government shutdown.

Events n’ stuff

Tonight is Wednesday, and that means you can come witness the machinations of the Hood River Country Recreation Trails Committee at 5pm at the OSU Extension office. We also have the following random events, should they be rain-friendly: Karma Yoga at 4pm at Flow (by donation), pickup rugby at Henkle Middle School (5:30), Sailboat Racing at the HR Marina (wondering when the last race happens, because the website doesn’t seem to be up to date), and pickup Ultimate at Wy’East Middle School in Odell.

Tomorrow night, the HRATS have a BOD meeting at the fire station in HR at 6pm. And at 6:30pm, the Skylight Theater shows my second-favorite movie ever: Rising from Ashes, the story of the Rwandan national cycling team.

You people forgot to tell me about the Grominator skate contest at the Hood River skate park on Saturday. Registration starts at 9am. This should be pure awesome, and you should be there to check it out. On Sunday, there’s the Superhero kids run/walk in The Dalles.

Friday is “First Friday”, an event my Google Calendar shortened to “First”. What can you do? Friday is day one of the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol swap in Hillsboro. It’s also the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

On Saturday, if you’re in the Gorge, you have a choice of the Green Home Tour (not in the rain, and bike-friendly this year), the Two Dam Punks 10k race (with a kids’ race too) in Stabler, and “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” in Cascade Locks (starting in the afternoon at the EasyCLIMB). On Sunday, it’s the Ashland Super D bike race (where there are currently less racers than prizes), combined with the Dirty Fingers campout at Ashland.

Have an awesome day today!

Random Morning Thoughts

Thank god the government shutdown doesn’t affect my weather models. They’re funded by the University of Washington.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

There’s not going to be much wind around here for the next few days. With a weather system moving through this afternoon, we’ll see the central Gorge hit 10-13, with a brief period of 21-24 from Maryhill to Arlington mid-afternoon. Tomorrow looks light. Thursday brings west wind at 13-15 near Hood River.

Plain old weather

It’s raining. I woke up this morning to silence, and I thought, “Oh yay, no dripping sounds. It’s not raining.” I forgot that I had slept with earplugs in. It’s raining. Definitely raining. And it’s dark. For the first time this season, I’m writing the forecast with my Happy Light fired up. Hello, winter.

We’ll see rain and showers today, heaviest this morning, but continuing in the “light showers” category all day. Tomorrow starts off dry, and stays mostly dry until 5pm, when it will (you got it) rain. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are looking dry, but the drenched ground is likely going to give birth to The Thing That Lives in the Gorge (aka, “The Inversion”, or “The Nothing”).

In snow news, Meadows has a 6” base. The snow level will be 4500′ this morning, rising to 5000′ later. New snow accumulation will be 1-3” at 5000′. Tomorrow sees the snow level at 5500′ early, falling to 5000′ overnight, with 2-3” of new snow.

More random TeMIra chatter

Oh. My. God. Crystal Mountain, WA blows my mind. They had (up to) 22” of snow during the rainstorm, and they are opening Green Valley today, and today only, for 75 lucky people to make rock skiing laps.

In other exciting news, Happy Obamacare Day. Whether you like it or not, the exchanges go live today. Well, Oregon’s was live when I checked at 6:30am. Washington’s would not load at 7:10am, despite official assurances last night that “We’re not really worried about [computer glitches]”. Guess we’re just a little more excitable here south of the Columbia – we probably went live at 12:00am with enough bandwidth to serve the entire country, not just Oregon.

Events n’ stuff

It’s my favorite night of the week: $12 Prime Rib and Freedom Fries at Cebu Lounge. Now that you can no longer pay $3 to be safe at the Ruins, you can pay $12 to clog your arteries at Cebu. Hey, you only live once. Go for it.

Tomorrow night, the Hood River County Trails Committee has a special meeting at the Extension office at 5pm. Then on Thursday night, the HRATS have a board of directors meeting at 6pm at the HR fire station.

Thursday at the Skylight Theater, you can see my favorite movie ever, Rising From Ashes, the story of the Rwandan National Cycling Team. One showing. 6:30pm.

Coming up Friday, it’s the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. It’s also day one of the MHSP swap in Hillsboro. Saturday is “Take a Kid Mountain Biking” Day in Cascade Locks in the afternoon and evening. These CL events are supposed to be pretty fun, so pack up the kids and bikes and go check it out. On Sunday, the Dirty Fingers crew heads to Ashland for the Super D race and campout. In the rain, likely. Just to warn y’all.

Have an awesome day today!
