Wednesday. 10/16. Gorge wind. Events. Dirt. Football.

It’s fall now, and that means it’s time for … more windsurfing and kiting! No, silly. It’s time to think about skiing.

You can get the best Mt. Hood snow forecast right here, all winter long, starting around November 15th. Bookmark this page. Come back for snow!

Random Morning Thoughts

I have no complaints about this weather, other than the fact that it’s making it hard for me to get my work done!

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

This morning’s gradients are on the strong side of nothing, but that doesn’t make them strong: It’s E .02 between Portland and The Dalles. That’ll give us easterlies at 10-15 for a good portion of the day, but the wind should switch to light west late in the afternoon.

Easterlies pick up again to 21-24 tomorrow and Friday. The 12k wind model is currently predicting strong west wind on Saturday, but I’m not sure I’m buying into that. Don’t get me wrong: I’d love to see a big westerly day near Hood River, but I’m not going to buy into that model’s prediction… yet.

Plain old weather

We might see some high clouds later today, but other than that, it’s sunshine and temperature inversions all the way through the weekend. As of 7am, it was 35 degrees in Hood River and 43 degrees at the base of Mt. Hood Meadows. See. Inverted.

Mountain biking

Yes, the dirt is good. And a gentle reminder to everyone. There are a couple of rules to follow out there on the trails: 1) pedestrians and equestrians always have the right of way over bikes. 2) bikes going uphill have the right of way over bikes going downhill. Why do I bring this up today? Because I was run off the trail by bikes several times during a trail run last night.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

I keep forgetting to mention that it’s time to get your garlic in the ground. Yeah, you, gardener, I’m talking to you.

Tonight is Paws for a Cause at Gallery 301 on Oak Street. It’s $20, and proceeds benefit Hood River Adopt-a-dog, helping you find a canine to hike with you, bike with you, and bring home poison oak oils for you. Also tonight, there’s Karma Yoga at 4pm at Flow – by donation.

Tomorrow night brings a fundraiser for the 44 Trails Association. Why do you care about this? Because you didn’t like riding that road between Knebal Springs and Surveyor’s Ridge, and now you don’t have to: It’s singletrack all the way from 450 to the bottom of Kitchen Sink. 44 Trails makes that kind of stuff happen (by supporting Ranger Jimmy T). So show up at Double Mountain between 6pm and 10pm and support the cause.

Also tomorrow night, the Seahawks play the Cardinals at 5:25pm. You can watch the game at Waucoma. Six Rivers, the local Dispute Resolution Center, is having social hour at Waucoma from 4:30-6. I am not sure how they intend to determine the interests and needs of the Cardinals’ fans vs. the Seahawks’ fans, but it could be interesting.

Coming up this weekend, it’s Harvest Fest, Friday through Sunday at the Event Site in Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m totally out of randomness.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

As of 8am, the wind hadn’t picked up, but that doesn’t mean it won’t pick up. With .10 gradient across the Cascades, Rooster Rock, at least, should see 24-28 mid-morning to early afternoon. Steven’s Locks will see 20-23, maybe a touch more.

As a weak weather system slides over the PNW tomorrow, the gradient will suffer. Our day will start with light east wind, perhaps as much as 13-15, in the western Gorge, but that wind will fade quickly. By evening, we’ll see W 5-10.

On Thursday, high pressure rebuilds across the region, giving us east wind at 22-25.

Plain old weather

Looks pretty damn sunny this week, with the exception of some high clouds tomorrow. Overnight temps will be in the 30’s, and daytime temps will be in the upper 50’s to low 60’s.

Mountain biking

Yes, the dirt is good, and yes, the chanterelles are still out. I picked a couple lbs yesterday.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

Tonight is (indoor) Ruins Tuesdays. Be careful if you’re going: they’ve dropped the $3 safety cover charge, meaning it’s no longer going to be safe. Cebu has $12 Prime Rib with fries tonight. Also tonight, there’s pickup rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30 and pickup Ultimate at St. Mary’s church on Belmont.

Coming up tomorrow night, it’s Paws for a Cause at Gallery 301. Normally I don’t post fundraisers that aren’t related directly to the outdoors, but Michael S. convinced me that dogs run behind bikes and dogs go for hikes, and I do also know that dogs can be trained to hunt truffles, which are one of my favorite foods on the planet. So, there. Support the adopt-a-dog program tomorrow night.

On Thursday, the Seattle Seahawks (5-1) play the Arizona Cardinals (3-3) at 5:25pm. Best place to watch is Waucoma Club. Also Thursday, the HRATS have a board of directors meeting at the fire station at 6pm. From 6-10pm on Thursday, the 44 Trails Association has a fundraiser at Double Mountain. These are the folks who brought you the SuperConnector Trail, linking Knebal Springs trail and Surveyor’s Ridge by singletrack. Beats the hell out of riding the road. Go make a donation.

Have an awesome day today!
