Random Morning Thoughts
Even NOAA is finding it difficult to craft engaging forecasts. They said so this morning in the AFD.
Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings
A couple of factors come into play over the next few days to reduce the gradient across the Cascades, and as a result, the easterlies will back off. Speaking of backing off, I see that I’ve been overpredicting the wind speeds for Steven’s Locks. I’ll stop doing that, given that we seem to be stuck in a setup that really favors Rooster.
So, call it upper twenties at Rooster today with upper teens at Stevenson. The wind backs off a bit tomorrow, for 22-25 at Rooster in the morning, fading during the day, with 13-16 at Stevenson Expect light wind on Friday.
Looking ahead to the weekend (really way too far out to predict), Saturday is leaning towards east wind, but models are showing an interesting westerly setup on Sunday. Sunday’s action depends on a lot of factors, including proper timing, so let’s just file the information away for future reference and update it as Sunday gets closer.

Plain old weather
Still nice. Might see a few high clouds tomorrow. Maybe.
Mountain biking
Road biking is where it’s at right now, although the dirt is pretty amazing too. And remember, we are in an inversion, so it’s going to be warm on the upper elevation trails too.

Tonight at 4, there’s Karma Yoga (free or by donation) at Flow, there’s pickup rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30, there’s Kayak Polo at the Hood River pool at 8pm, and there’s a talk on the Cape Horn Trail (with refreshments) at Hegewald Center in Stevenson at 7pm.
Meadows will be taking pass photos at the TGR ski movie at Andrew’s tomorrow, and they’ll be at Double Mountain on Friday evening.
On Saturday, the HRATS have a trail work party. Meet at 8:30am at Family Man. All hikers, bikers, equestrians, and moto folks are encouraged to be at the work party, as it’s going to happen on motorized and non-motorized trails.
There are three running races on Saturday: There’s the Parkdale fun run/walk at 9:30am. There’s the 5k Pumpkin Trail Run in North Bonneville at Strawberry Island trailhead at 9. There’s the Harvest Hustle 5k/10k at Mid-Valley Elementary, with registration at 8:30ish, run at 9:30.
Also on Saturday, keeping me away from the work party, it’s the Oregon Meteorological Society winter weather conference at OMSI.
On Sunday, it’s the Columbia Gorge Marathon. You can cool down from the marathon on Sunday evening at the Vampires and Victims 5k. Put on your best costume, and show up at HRVHS at 4pm. Half the runners will be assigned to be victims. Half are vampires. And then the chase begins…
Also Sunday, Dirty Fingers has a “we hate cancer” Post n’ Pint ride at noon, followed by a boobie-filled BBQ (chicken breast and boobie cupcakes). All proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen foundation.
