Good morning,
Just a friendly reminder from my friends at Hood River Rotary: January 21st is the annual Rotary Ski Night at Meadows. Tickets for skiing from 3-9pm are just $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. You can purchase advance tickets now and support a great cause, whether you plan on going or not.
Ok, fine. The inversion clouds can do as they like. They can stay for the next few days. I am giving up on forecasting them leaving. At least the trails will stay frozen for riding, which might save your soul from a slow death due to inversion clouds.
Today in the Gorge will be cold and grey, with east wind at 40+ at Rooster (iWindsurf’s sensor is back, and was reading 48mph at the time of this report), and 30+ at Stevenson. If you go windsurfing or kiting today, you deserve a soak in a hot tub after.
Tomorrow also looks cold and below freezing in the Gorge, with easterlies at 30-40. Tuesday looks cold and grey and below freezing with east wind. Around 4am Wednesday, we’ll see snow start falling in the Gorge (just a little), but by 7am, the wind should switch to west, bringing warmer weather and a switch to rain.
There’s a pattern change in sight for Mt. Hood too. It’s currently above the inversion. Yesterday had the clearest air I think I’ve ever seen. Every tiny detail of the higher Mt. Hood slopes was visible to the naked eye. The sky was bluer than Blue #1. Today will be warm and sunny on Mt. Hood, with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 10,000′ and temps just over 50 degrees at 5000′. Wind will be light and variable today.
Monday looks like a repeat, with the FAF at 13,000′ and temps at 50 degrees midday. Wind will be W 10-15 early and SW 20 later. Remember that Mt. Hood Meadows has $10 (in advance) night skiing Monday night, benefiting Hood River Rotary. Please purchase a ticket, even if you’re not going, as the $10 goes to benefit a great cause that benefits my town.

Tuesday will be the final day of the Great Inversion, with one last round of sun on Mt. Hood. The FAF will be at 12,000′. High temps will be lower: around 40 degrees. Wind will be W 10-15 early, becoming SW 15-20 in the afternoon. Sunshine will stick around for much of the day, before high clouds start moving in on Tuesday afternoon. The freezing level will plummet overnight Tuesday.
By 4am Wednesday, it should be snowing on Mt. Hood, with the freezing level at 2000′ in the morning, dropping to 1500′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .4” water value between 4am and 1pm, with a mix of flurries and sunbreaks after that. Total snowfall will be 4-5”. Wind will be SW 30 early, swinging to NW 30 by midday.
After Wednesday, we’re in a pattern of showery weather, with flurries and sunbreaks but not significant snow accumulation in the forecast.
