Pi Day 3.14 Mt. Hood incoming snow, Gorge events, and PIE!

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

First off today, some very important news: It’s Pi Day! No, that’s not a typo. It’s 3.14 day, and that means it’s time to celebrate with a misspelling: PIE! The official Pi Day run/bike ride is meeting at Syncline at 6pm. Bring a pie to share after the ride.

In other news: mark your calendar for another WTA work party on Syncline this weekend. Meet at 8:30 both days at the base of Courtney Road. Also this weekend, on Saturday, there’s the Upper Wind kayaking festival and race. And speaking of kayaking, the Hood River pool is open for roll practice on Tuesday and Thursday evenings again. River levels: White Salmon, 2.8′. Klickitat: 1540cfs. Hood River: 4.6′. And more kayaking stuff: National Geographic Adventurer Charlie Munsey will be at Columbia Center for the Arts on Wednesday, March 20th. His photos are amazing, and he’s a good guy, so come see his slideshow and presentation!

Moving on to Gorge weather: mid-40’s this morning, low 60’s this afternoon, under increasingly cloudy sky. The wind will be non-existent this morning and W 21-24 this afternoon. Tomorrow: mid-40’s early, mid-50’s in the afternoon with low clouds becoming high overcast late. West wind at 15-18. Saturday: cloudy, with rain likely after noon. Low 40’s early, upper 40’s in the afternoon. Sunday: Frost alert for you gardeners. Near freezing in the morning under partly cloudy sky. Low 40’s in the afternoon. Looking at the extended forecast, there’s a very good chance of sticking snow in Odell and Parkdale on Saturday night and next Wednesday. Do not remove your studded tires.

Up on Mt. Hood, we’re about to see a change for the better. Today starts off warm and sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 11,000′ early, 7500′ at 2pm, and 6000′ at 5pm as the cold front swings through, rising briefly to 7500′ overnight before falling to 5500′ Friday morning. We’ll see light rain, possibly mixed with snow, overnight, for .1-.3” water value (WV) and no significant accumulation. Wind today will be SW 25-30 early, SW 40 early afternoon, and W 40 in the evening and overnight.

Friday starts off sunny on the mountain, with snow starting around 5pm. The FAF will be 5500′ early and 6000′ in the evening, falling to 3000′ by Saturday morning. Expect .1-.3” WV overnight, for 1-2” of new snow. Wind will be W 20-25 all day.

Saturday starts with snow flurries and sunbreaks, with heavier snowfall starting by 2pm. The snow level will be 3000′ early, falling to 1500′ in the afternoon and evening. As of now, the models are saying .4-.7” WV, for 4-7” of new snow by Sunday morning. Wind will be W 25-30 early, SW 35-40 midday and W 40 overnight.

Sunday looks cold, with orographic snow flurries mixed with sunbreaks. The snow level will be around 1000′. No significant snow accumulation. NW wind at 35 early, WNW 30 midday and WNW 20 in the evening. More significant snowfall and a big change in the weather pattern looks likely for the middle of next week.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

When I woke up this morning, it was 50 degrees at my house in Hood River. That’s pretty darn warm for this time of year at 4am. But the great news is that it’s going to get warmer today. I know that’s not great news for everyone, but I like warm weather. I get cold easily – I’m more lizard than human, I think. Or maybe more rattlesnake than human – I like to sun myself on rocks. Either way, 65 degrees for a high today sounds good to me!

In the Gorge, we’ll see light west wind this morning giving way to light/calm wind this afternoon. Temps will be near 50 early and 60-65 this afternoon under partly cloudy/high overcast sky.

Tomorrow looks cloudy, with light wind early becoming W 17-21 in the afternoon. Temps will be around 50 in the morning and 55-60 in the afternoon. We’ll likely see a few sprinkles after 5pm.

Friday brings low clouds in the morning with partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. The wind will be light westerly. Temps will be 45ish in the morning and 55ish in the afternoon. Looks like Friday’s the end of the heat wave, with colder weather for the next week.

Up on Mt. Hood, it’ll be a partly cloudy day with occasional sprinkles in the morning and sunshine later. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 8000′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 20-25 early and SW 20-25 in the afternoon.

On Thursday, we’ll have high clouds over Mt. Hood, with a chance of sprinkles after 5pm. The FAF will be 11,000 early, 8000′ early afternoon and 6500′ overnight. Wind will be SW 25 early, going to W 30 overnight.

Friday starts with low clouds and a few sprinkles or flurries. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 5500′ midday and 6500′ in the evening. Wind will be W 20 early, going to WSW 15 mid-morning.

Saturday looks much colder, with the snow level at 3000′ early, mid-morning and 2500′ overnight. It’ll be cloudy with a few flurries, and a much stronger, wetter (hopefully) system will move in after 8pm, for .5-.7” water value (WV) and 5-7” of new snow. Wind will be W 25 all day, becoming SW 25-30 overnight. Flurries continue on Sunday under partly cloudy sky.

Have an awesome day today!
