3/16 Gorge wind, Mt. Hood snow and events.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

It’s finally snowing on Mt. Hood again, and the snow will continue all day today! With this much moisture falling in the Gorge, we’ll probably lose some of the mountain biking trails to mud, but we’ll have good skiing in exchange.

If you’re looking for something to do today or tomorrow, WTA has a work party on Syncline at 8:30am both days. In theory, you’re supposed to sign up ahead of time, and you’re supposed to be there all day, but I bet they won’t send you home if you just show up for a few hours!

In Gorge weather, obviously we’ll see some sprinkles today – duh, it was raining when I left my house at 5:20am – with heavier rain tonight. We’ll see temps in the upper 40’s this morning and mid 50’s this afternoon. Wind today will increase to gusty 15-18 near Hood River with gusty 25-29 east of Mosier this afternoon. There’s a pretty good chance of sticking snow in Parkdale this afternoon and evening. How much just depends on how fast the snow level drops.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy in the Gorge, with sprinkles possible west of Hood River. It’ll be in the mid- to upper thirties early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. We’ll have strong, steady west wind at 28-32+ from Mosier eastward in the morning, fading to 25-29 in the afternoon. Hood River will see gustier west wind at 22-26.

Monday looks partly cloudy, becoming clear. Temps will be in the low to mid-thirties early, with a chance of frost, especially above 500′. Temps will rise near 50 in the afternoon. Wind Monday will be fairly steady, at 23-26 in the Central Gorge.

Up on Mt. Hood, it’ll be a snowy day today. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 2000′ mid-morning and 1500′ overnight. We’ll see flurries through 2pm, and heavier snow after that. We’ll see .6-.8” water value (WV) between 2pm and tomorrow morning, for 6-9” of new snow. Wind will be W 25 early, WSW 30 mid-morning. Sometime in the late afternoon or early evening, the wind will go to W 45-50.

Sunday starts mostly clear, with a few orographic snow flurries possible during the day. Clouds move in late in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 500′, although the strong sun will likely raise the temps during the day. Wind will be WNW 40 early, 30 at 11am, slowly dropping to 20-25 in the evening.

Monday starts off partly cloudy, becoming clear. The freezing level will be 500′ early, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 20-25 all day.

Tuesday starts off clear, with snow starting in the afternoon. Looks like more snow will fall Wednesday and Thursday.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

Looks like winter is going to reappear for the next week or so. Planted your tomatoes already? I told you that wasn’t an option until the snow is gone from Mt. Defiance! Speaking of gardening stuff, there’s a seed exchange at Grow Organic on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm. Also this weekend: WTA work parties at Syncline both Saturday and Sunday at 8:30am. And the Upper Wind kayak festival on Saturday.

In biking news, the dirt is good. Get it now, because there’s precip in the forecast next week, and that’ll send your mud-phobic full-suspension bike scrambling for cover in the garage. Want to protect your expensive rear suspension? Build a hardtail 29’er like my Canfield Brothers Yelli Screamy. Best. Bike. Ever.

In forecast news, today looks sprinkly, with periods of less sprinkly, and possibly even partly cloudy weather. Temps will be right around 50 this morning, rising to the upper 50’s this afternoon. The wind will pick up to gusty west 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon.

Saturday looks cloudy with a few sprinkles in the western Gorge. Expect temps in the mid 40’s early and 50ish in the afternoon. Wind will pick up to gusty 26-30+ east of Hood River, with 18-23 in the Central Gorge.

Sunday looks great for windsurfing and kiting, if you don’t mind colder weather: Clear sky, becoming cloudy late. Temps in the mid-30’s early and mid-40’s in the afternoon. Strong, steady west wind at 28-32 east of the cloud line, likely strongest at Doug’s, Maryhill and Arlington.

Up on Mt. Hood, winter returns sometime today, as temps drop and the rain/freezing rain mix turns to snow flurries. The snow level will be 6500′ early, dropping to 5000′ around 2pm. No measurable accumulation. Wind will be W 25-30 this morning, falling to W 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Saturday starts off cloudy, with flurries in the morning and heavier snowfall after noon. The snow level will be 3000′ early, dropping to 1500′ by 11am. Expect .1-.3” water value (WV) before 4pm, for 1-3” of new snow. Another .5-.8” WV falls by 4am Sunday, for 5-8” of new snow. Wind will be SW 20 early, 30 midday and W 30 in the evening.

Sunday starts off clear, with a few orographic flurries. Clouds move in late afternoon. The snow level will be 500-1000′ all day. We’ll get up to .2” WV during the day, for less than 2” of new. Wind will be WNW 35-40 early, becoming NW 30-35 mid-morning and NW 20-25 in the evening.

Monday looks clear or partly cloudy, with the freezing level at 1500′ and light to moderate wind with no snowfall. More snow arrives Tuesday through the extended forecast.

Have an awesome day today!
