4/11 Mt. Hood snow, Gorge wind, and cold, cold, unseasonably cold weather headed this way.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

Ah… so yesterday I meant to say you could get your discounted Port of Hood River parking passes starting May 1st. I have no idea why you can’t get them yet, but you can’t. So… my apologies for those of you who jumped on that bit of misinformation.

Next, I don’t know where the windsurfers and kiters were yesterday, but they weren’t at Arlington, where it was 3.5 with okay swell. They also weren’t at Rufus or The Wall when I drove by at 6pm. It was sub-3.0 there with big waves. Maybe they were mountain biking, although the trails were likely too muddy… speaking of mountain biking: if Post Canyon dries out, the Post and Pint is a go. Meet at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers (call before to see if it’s on). If you complete the ride, you earn free beer. (yuck. Beer.)

You may want to do a wind sport instead of riding today. It appears the marine layer is past HR this morning, so you’ll want to be somewhere between Mosier and John Day Dam this afternoon for relatively steady 28-32mph. Temps will be in the mid 40’s this morning and low 50’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow starts with clear sky and temps in the low 40’s, rising to the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light until about 11am, when it will pick up to gusty W 21-24. We’ll see some sprinkles overnight, with flurries possible in the wee hours above 1000′.

If you live above 500′, you’ll likely see frost or flurries on Saturday morning, depending on when the sky clears. Temps at river level will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be… NUKING out of the west, especially early, but holding in the nearly-nuking category all afternoon east of The Dalles. Don’t forget about the Seven Streams tree planting party at 9am.

Sunday looks clear and chilly, with frost above 500′ and west wind at 24-28.

On Mt. Hood, it’s currently rather … icy, as it rained an inch yesterday and then temps dropped into the low 20’s. It will be clear this morning, with high clouds this afternoon and flurries tonight with no accumulation. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ early and 2500′ later, with NNW wind at 10-15.

Tomorrow starts clear, becoming overcast midday. The FAF will be 2000′ early and 6500′ after 11am. Looks like we’ll see rain or freezing rain after 11pm, with .2-.4” falling by Saturday morning, with a chance of some flurries at the end of the precip. Wind Friday will be W 10 early, SW 15 midday and SW 30 in the evening, becoming W 50 overnight as the front passes.

Now, I prefer the strongest wind to happen between 7am and 10am, because it makes my life more interesting, but it looks like the strongest wind will be overnight. At 5am Saturday, the snow level will be at a stunning less-than-1000′, slowly rising to 2000′ Saturday afternoon. There will be orographic snow flurries during the day, with heavier snow overnight dropping .2-.4” by Sunday morning for a couple inches of new snow (sorry, Parkdale). Wind Saturday will be W 40-50 early, dropping to WNW 30-35 at 11am and W 40 at 5pm.

Sunday looks cold with a few flurries and WNW wind at 20-25. Sunday, remember, is Ski Free Day at Skibowl – last day of the season there.

Have an awesome day today!

4/10 Mt. Hood rain/snow, Gorge nukin’ wind, and free skiing at Skibowl!

Good morning,

Spring’s been nice. Winter’s back. And it’s not going anywhere for the next week, with the possible exception of Friday, when it might be relatively nice. After Friday, though, we’re going into a stretch of unseasonably cold weather, with periods of cold drizzle. We’ll also see fresh snow in the mountains and very windy days on the Columbia. And we’ll see frost in the Gorge Sunday and Monday nights.

Just a few reminders: pick up your Port of Hood River parking pass at a discount if you buy it now. Make plans to be at the Seven Streams tree planting party on Saturday. It’s your trail. Help make it prettier. Also, Sunday is SKI FREE day at Skibowl. Never been there? This is your chance. Head to Skibowl West and experience the Upper Bowl for free. Make sure you head to the Beer Stube for nachos later – best in the west for nachos, for sure!

Today in the Gorge, expect the clouds to start dropping drizzle by midday. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 50’s later. As the front swings through early afternoon, the wind will pick up. Expect gusty 18-21 in the western Gorge with 28-32 at Doug’s and Maryhill, picking up to 30-35 at Maryhill and Arlington between 2pm and 5pm.

Thursday starts with marine clouds in the western Gorge and sun out east. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 50’s late. We’ll see W wind at 15-18 in the western Gorge with 21-24 early at Doug’s-Maryhill and steady 29-33 in the afternoon, probably strongest from Mosier-The Dalles, but possibly filling in at the Hatch and Hood River (in which case you’ll see me on the water).

Friday starts with clear sky, but high clouds move in quickly. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and low 50’s later. Wind will be E 21-23 through midday, swinging to W 10-15 in the afternoon, so this is probably your best road biking day this week.

Saturday brings NUKING west wind to the Gorge. 30+ everywhere with temps in the upper 40’s.

On Mt. Hood, today starts with mist, transitions to drizzle, and then switches to rain, before a period of colder weather and snow flurries tonight. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 6500′ midday and 5000′ this evening. We’ll see .9” water value (WV) as rain during the day, followed by .1” WV as snow tonight for an inch or so of new. Wind will be WSW 35 early, W 45-50 midday and WNW 30-40 in the late afternoon.

Thursday starts with a few snow flurries, but maybe, perhaps, the sky will clear later. No snow accumulation. Sunbreaks will abound, if nothing else. The snow level will be 1500′ early and 3000′ later. Wind will be NW 20-25 early and NW 15 in the afternoon.

Friday starts clear, with high clouds moving in. The freezing level will be 2000′ early and 7000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be light and variable early, SW 10-15 midday and WSW 25-30 late.

Saturday starts cloudy, with the snow level at 6000′, quickly dropping to 1500′ by 11am. We might see a little rain early, but it will quickly switch to snow, with .6” falling by 5pm, for 3-4” of new. Wind will be very strong: W 45-50 early, W 50 midday and W 40-45 in the afternoon. Flurries continue on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
