Mt. Hood Snow Sunshine Forecast

I could be wrong because I’m not there, but I’m pretty sure that Mt. Hood resembles an ice skating rink this morning. Why? 2-3” of rain fell on the snowpack in the last storm system. At 7am, it was 20° at 5000′ and 13° at 8000′, so yes, I do believe “Ice Skating Rink” is an apt description. Break out the Zamboni, and let’s try downhill ice skating!

The ice skating rink will stay icy for a couple of days before turning into lovely corn snow this weekend, at least in the morning. The afternoon snow, well, let’s see just how warm it gets…

Anyway, the forecast: Cold and clear for the next two days. Today sees the free air freezing level (FAF) at the surface this morning, rising to 500′ midday. Wind will be NE 10-20. Tomorrow, Thursday, sees the FAF at the surface, rising to 500′ or less late in the afternoon with NE wind at 20 early and 10 late.

We’ll see a major temperature inversion develop Friday: Low elevations stay cold while temps hover just above freezing between 5000′ and 7000′ in the morning, rising to 40° at 5000′ in the afternoon, with the FAF at 9000′. Wind Friday will be light and variable (LTV).

Saturday sees a more pronounced inversion, with the FAF around 10,000′ and temps at 5000′ at 40° in the morning, approaching 50° in the afternoon with LTV wind. Same goes for Sunday.

Next chance of precip? Well, there’s no model consensus beyond Tuesday, and there’s no precip before Tuesday, so I have no idea when it’ll next rain or snow.

Plain Old Local Weather

Down here in the Gorge, it’s clear and cold and sunny and awesome. It’ll be clear and cold and awesome up high too, but on the weekend, it’ll be clear and “warm” and awesome at high elevations. Watch out for freeze-thaw mud if you’re headed up high.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s 31° in the Gorge this morning. Do you really want to go windsurfing or kiting? It’s going to be 25° tomorrow morning. Really? Okay. I’m not your mom, but somebody else should take that heartbreaking job before you succumb to hypothermia. Here’s the forecast: light easterlies this morning pick up to 26-30+ later today. Tomorrow sees Stevenson at 30+ and Rooster at 40+. Ditto for Friday and probably Saturday.

Road and Mountain Biking

There were puddles everywhere in Post when I went running yesterday afternoon, so that may be a bit muddy. Syncline, if it didn’t free overnight, should be great. If it froze, you’re looking at slippery freeze-thaw today. I suspect we’ll see freeze-thaw mud tomorrow, as south-facing Syncline warms up just enough to melt the mud. My guess, and I’m just guessing here, is that Post will be frozen solid and epic on Thursday, if you can handle the cold. Whoopdee will be somewhere in between. Anyone know if the 44 Road trails are snowy now? I suspect the last rain storm melted the snow from the last snow storm… And the roads, they look dry and awesome! So many choices in bike world this week!

In other bike news, the HRATS have a BOD meeting on Thursday at the Hood River Fire Station at 5:30pm.

Mt. Hood Snow Rain Forecast

(insert long string of expletives)

There was a funny conversation on Facebook last night after Meadows posted a photo of the radar image and said it was snowing. Someone replied with “I hope Temira Lital is wrong about the forecast,” to which I replied, “Temira hopes she’s wrong too,” eliciting 8 likes. Temira giggled, because it amuses her to speak in the third person.

Sadly, Temira was not wrong, and it rained 2” at Meadows, Timberline and Skibowl last night, instead of snowing two feet. I was almost too irritated to look at the precip model this morning. Anyway, the snow level is theoretically 7500′ right now, but judging by the sleet on the Cascade cam, it’s higher. The snow level will drop to 6500′ by 10am and then plummet to 1500′ by 4pm. We’ll see .2-.5” water value (WV) today before this slow-moving system exits through the gift shop. Then we’ll see clear sky overnight, turning the rain-soaked snowpack into an ice skating rink. Wind today will be W 35 early, 40 midday, and WNW 35 in the afternoon, swinging to ENE overnight.

Wednesday starts off clear, with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 500′, falling to the surface in some areas during the day. Wind will be ENE 10 in the morning, becoming NE 20 midday.

It looks wicked cold, but clear, on Thursday, with the FAF at the surface early, rising to 500′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NE 15-20. The next chance of precipitation is nowhere to be seen on the models. Enjoy the sunshine.

Plain Old Local Weather

I’m making grumbling faces as I write this, although the grumble-causing weather should slide south before long. Expect cloudy, rainy conditions this morning. Then this afternoon, expect clearing skies and dropping temps.

Tomorrow, well, are we going to see the Nothing or clear sky? The sounding model suggests some low clouds tomorrow morning, followed by clear sky on Thursday as the air mass dries out. But. There’s a catch. It’s going to be frigid: Expect Gorge temps to hover right around freezing on Wednesday and to start off in the mid-twenties on Thursday, warming to the mid-thirties Thursday afternoon. And temps should warm up for the rest of the week. Two-day cold snap. Exciting. Fur coat is coming out for sure.

If you have sensitive plants living outside, bring them in today. It’s time.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today may be starting off gloomy and wet, but it’s also starting off with .04/.05 gradients. As this front passes this afternoon (and temps drop 10-15 degrees), we’ll see westerlies pick up to 15-18 near Hood River with 23-26 east of Mosier. If you’d like to die of hypothermia, you can sail sub-freezing east wind on Wednesday and Thursday, or you can hold out for warmer easterlies later in the week. I’m refusing to post wind speed predictions for those sub-freezing days.

You want meat? We got meat. $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight. Those folks were so pleased with my hunk-of-meat pushing that they hired me to push their other meats. This amuses me. But joking aside, I really do love hanging out there. The food is good, the atmosphere is good, and they have couches. There’s something lovely about sitting on couches and eating, maybe because it feels like breaking the rules?

If you prefer to exercise tonight, there’s pickup rugby at Collins Field in Hood River (across from Jackson Park) at 5:30pm. Or you could exercise and then go eat meat.

Coming up tomorrow night, it’s the last night of Kayak Polo, unless you kayak folks pull your wallets out and start kicking down some cash. Also tomorrow, there’s free/donation Karma Yoga at 4pm at Flow.
