4/21 Mt. Hood sun, Gorge wind, sick road biking, and a bunch of events.

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

We have an emergency notice this morning: The HRATS weren’t quite able to finish 8-Track yesterday, despite 30 folks swinging tools. So, there’s another work party today. 9am. Family Man. Be there. Let’s get this thing done and get off that nasty old road (although there’s a beautiful view from that nasty old road…)

Next, there’s a swap meet at Windance this morning. Since I can’t be there, that means you have to put up with a list of my stuff for sale at some point this week. =)

Also today, the Cherry of a Ride, benefiting St. Mary’s in The Dalles (sounds windy), and the Ram’s Head Randonee (marketed as the ‘Rams Head Randonee’ – not sure whose head is being rammed) at Meadows. There’s pickup touch Rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm too.

In weather news, the west wind continues, once again, on the weekend, when you weekend warriors can get it and us weekend workers have to sit in the office sighing while looking at iWindsurf. With low clouds over the western Gorge today, we’ll see 15-18 here, but as a trough moves in this afternoon, westerlies pick up to 26-30, first at Stevenson (clouds be damned) and then from Lyle eastward to Arlington. Expect it to be gusty. Temps today will be in the upper 40’s early and upper 50’s later.

Tomorrow sees an abrupt shift to east wind under clear sky. Expect a quick build to 23-26 at Stevenson and Rooster, with 5-15 through the rest of the Gorge. Woot, woot. It’s totally going to be a day to head east on a long road ride early and come back with a tailwind midday. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and low 60’s late.

On Tuesday, we start with east wind at 23-26, becoming very light west wind late in the day. Sunny sky. Temps low 40’s early and upper 60’s late.

Mt. Hood sees partly sky this morning with high clouds later and maybe just maybe a few sprinkles. The freezing level (FAF) will be around 6500′ (dumb models say 4000 or less, but it’s already well above that). Wind will be NW 25 early, becoming W 20 mid-afternoon.

Tomorrow looks clear, with the FAF at 2000′ early and 4000’+ later with NE wind at 15mph. Tuesday sees the FAF at 6000′ with NE wind at 15 early, becoming NW at 20 by midday. Wednesday looks clear, with the FAF at 5000′ early and 10,000′ later with E wind at 5-15.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

Isn’t the weather nicer today? Nicer in the Gorge, nicer in Portland, nicer on the mountain. Aaaah. Get out and give back for Earth Day!

Here are your options in the Gorge: HRATS building a new mile of 8-Track – meet at Family Man at 8:30am. Waterfront Park weeding and other activities – 9am to noon. River cleanup with Riverkeepers – 10am, Discovery Center. CGKA beach improvement at Viento – 9am.

In weather news, today will be partly cloudy in the central Gorge with sun out east. It’ll be windy too: 21-24 early through the whole Gorge, picking up to 30-35 from Mosier east to Arlington this afternoon. Strongest wind will be from Lyle to Maryhill. Temps today will be in the low 50’s early and upper 50’s late.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy early and cloudy later. Wind will be gusty 23-26 in the morning and gusty 26-30 in the afternoon, with the steadiest wind at Stevenson and useable wind all the way east to Arlington. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 40’s late.

Monday looks clear. Although models suggest we’ll see temps in the low 40’s in the morning and low 60’s in the afternoon, I wouldn’t be surprised to see frost in the Hood River Valley Monday morning. Anyway, wind on Monday will be E 23-26 at Stevenson and Rooster and E 5-15 in the rest of the Gorge in the afternoon.

Tuesday looks very similar to Monday, but high temps will be in the 70’s It’s worth mentioning that the coast will be GOING OFF Monday through Wednesday, with north wind at 25+ from, say, Manzanita south (picking up to 40ish at Pistol). Unfortunately, there will just be a 3′ west swell.

On Mt. Hood, ski season continues, with flurries today, becoming more clear later. The snow level will be 4000′ early and 6500′ at 5pm. No accumulation. Wind NW 25 all day.

Tomorrow sees cloudy sky over Mt. Hood with a chance of flurries, but no accumulation. The snow level will be 5000′ early and 2000′ after 8am. Wind will be W 20-30 early and NW 20-30 after 8am. Monday starts clear and cold, with the free air freezing level at 1500′, rising to 4000′ or higher in the afternoon, with E/NE wind at 15mph. Tuesday through Thursday looks warm and springlike on the hill with N or NE wind.

Have an awesome day today!
