2/13 Mt. Hood snow (disappointing amounts of it), Gorge wind, and brown pow. More brown pow. When will we get deep pow?

It’s the 1st annual Winter Pledge Drive!

Thank you for using this forecast! It’s free to use, but it’s not free for me to write. I put about an hour a day into creating a (hopefully) accurate forecast, and I pay for the hosting on this website. If you use this forecast to pick the good days on the hill or on the river, if you find this report saves you gas money or time, please make a donation during pledge drive month! I’m just one gal with other jobs writing this for you! Your generosity keeps this going for everyone. I also send an email version of this forecast. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the pledge drive. Here’s how this works. If I get donations totally $15 or more today, I post a forecast tomorrow. To make this fair, I’ll update the color of the dot during the day (a girl’s gotta work, you know.)

Today’s forecast status: as of 6:07am. Thank you so much for your support!

Good morning,

I’m sick. And I’m surprised. It’s hard concentrating on writing this forecast when all I really want to do is crawl back into bed. Really hard concentrating. That’s what’s surprising. That said, once the sun comes up, and once I finish my day’s work, sickness won’t stop me from pursuing brown pow on the bike trails. So take that, stupid virus. I’ll beat you into submission by beating myself up on the trails!

Gorge weather for the next few days looks mild and bike-friendly. It’s 49 degrees this morning. It’ll actually get a bit colder today, but will stay in the 40’s with a few rain showers. Thursday looks similar, with temps in the upper 40’s all day under cloudy sky. Friday brings a return to the gloomy inversion, but temps should stay in the upper 30’s to low 40’s. Saturday looks a bit colder, but will likely clear in the afternoon. Wind for the next few days: W 25-29 east of Hood River today, with 17-21 near town. W 10-15 tomorrow morning, picking up to 21-24 in the afternoon. Friday brings easterlies at 26-30. Saturday starts with light east wind, switching to west wind in the afternoon.

It’s starting to look like yesterday’s precip models were doing some outlying, as they’ve backed way off on precip amounts. That’s changing my plans for today! The snow level is currently around 4500′ (and it rained on Mt. Hood last night). The snow level will fall to 2500′ this afternoon and evening. Precip amounts, around an inch in yesterday’s model runs, have backed off to .2-.3” water value (WV) today, so we’ll only see 2-3” more snow. Another .1” or so falls overnight, for another inch of snow. Wind today will be strong: WNW 35-40 this morning, W 30-35 midday and NW 25 in the evening.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy / partly cloudy on Mt. Hood. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 6000′ at 10am, and 7000′ by 4pm. Fortunately, the precip will mostly stay north of us, with just a few sprinkles or very wet flurries falling during the day. No significant accumulation. The sky will clear overnight.

Friday looks sunny and warm on the mountain. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000-10000′ all day. Wind will be NE 10 in the morning, becoming SW 15 in the afternoon, at which point some high clouds may move in.

Saturday starts off clear with a few flurries possible in the afternoon. The FAF will be 9000′ early, 6500′ mid-morning, 5000′ in the early afternoon, and 1500′ in the evening. Models are all over the place on precip amounts, so I’m not making any guesses at this point. Nothing significant, if I had to guess. Wind will be SW 20 early, W 25 midday, and W 30 in the evening (although I won’t be surprised by stronger wind given the huge drop in the freezing level).

Sunday looks clear, cold and dry.

The extended forecast suggests colder, wetter weather for the beginning of next week.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

I’m sitting at my desk this morning surrounded by forecasting models, sure, but I’m also surrounded by seed packets. This sunny, warmish, west wind weather has me feeling like spring has arrived, even though we’re far from spring. Remember, March tends to be wet in the lowlands and very snowy in the mountains. Don’t be fooled by the February lamb; the March lion will be here soon!

In the meantime, the Gorge will remain above freezing for the next few days. Tempted to start lettuce? Me too! Expect temps in the mid-forties through Thursday. We’ll see a mostly cloudy day today, with a few sprinkles possible. Tomorrow looks cloudy with some rain. Thursday starts off rainy, with partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. On Friday, a prediction of strong east wind through the Gorge almost certainly portends a gloomy day of low cloud cover, but at least it will be dry, if cooler.

Wind in the Gorge will be gusty 24-28 this afternoon east of Hood River. Tomorrow will be gusty 21-24 through much of the Gorge, strongest east of The Dalles. Thursday brings light wind, and Friday brings easterlies at 26-30.

On Mt. Hood today, a partly cloudy and very windy morning will give way to snow flurries by 1pm. The snow level today will be 3000′. Total precip will be .1-.2” water value (WV) by 4pm, for less than 2” of new. Another .2-.3” WV falls overnight, for 2-3” by Wednesday morning. Wind today will be NW 25-35 pretty much all day.

Tomorrow brings heavier snowfall starting around 7am. Strong NW flow will contribute orographic enhancement to the snowfall amounts: expect .8-1.2” WV for 8-12”+ during the day followed by another .5-.6” WV overnight for 5-6” more. Hopefully you like storm skiing, because the wind will be WNW 30-35 early, picking up to WNW 40-45 early afternoon and then going to NW 40 in the evening. This is my pick for best day of the week.

The snow level rises Wednesday night, and will be around 5500′ early Thursday morning. By 10am, it’ll be at 6000′, not dropping until 10pm, when it falls to 4500′. That means we’ll likely see a mix of rain and snow and freezing rain and sleet and whatever else on Thursday. Total precip will be .3-.4” WV before 4pm, with precip tapering off to nothing after that. Wind Thursday will be WNW 30 early, NW 25 at 10am, NW 15 at 4pm and N 15 at 10pm.

Friday looks clear on the mountain with the freezing level rising to 10,000′ by 4pm with light wind.

Saturday starts off clear, with flurries moving in. Sunday starts off snowy, becoming clear later. The extended forecast contains a few inches of snow each day.

Have an awesome day today!
