Rain on the mountain. Blech. I know it’s good for the snowpack – more water equivalent is good for farmers and kayakers and gardeners and everyone who likes to drink water during the summer. But I would prefer snow in the snowpack to rain in the snowpack.

In Gorge news, today is going to be wet and mild, with temps in the mid-forties with light wind. Tomorrow brings light wind… hard to tell if we’ll see inversion clouds, but it does look warm – in the 50’s in the afternoon. Saturday also looks warm, with temps in the 50’s midday under clear sky in the morning and clouds in the afternoon with light wind becoming west in the afternoon. The Gorge will see a few rain showers Saturday night, with snow possible in Parkdale. Sunday looks much colder – in the low 40’s, with west wind at 24-28+.

I really thought we might sneak by with snow this morning, but at 4:30am, it was already alternating between rain and snow on the flanks of Mt. Hood. With temps forecast to rise, the inevitable outcome is a switch to rain. So, the snow level at 7am will be 6500′, rising to 7500′ by 4pm and briefly dropping to 6000′ overnight. We’ll get 1” or so of water value (WV) today, for no accumulation other than water in the snowpack. We’ll get another .2-.4” WV overnight. Same thing. Water in the snowpack. Wind today will be W 25-35 early, rising to W 30-40 around 4pm.

Tomorrow looks warm and dry on the mountain and, for that matter, in the valleys. The freezing level will be at 9000′ all day with partly cloudy sky. Wind will be WSW 20-25 early, becoming SW 20-25 in the evening.

Saturday starts off dry and warm and clear, becoming cold and snowy late. The freezing level will be 9000′ early, 6500′ by 4pm, and then will plummet to 1500′ by 10pm. Snow starts falling around 7pm, for .3” WV by Sunday morning and 2-3” of new snow. Wind Saturday will be SW 20 early, 30 early afternoon and WSW 40 overnight.

Sunday starts with mixed flurries and sunbreaks, becoming clear midday and partly cloudy late. The freezing level will be 1000-1500′. Wind will be WNW 30-35 early, NW 25-30 by mid-morning and N 10-20 in the evening.

Good morning,

Gorge weather for the next few days contains one stellar day, so if you can skip out early Friday, do it! Today will be in the mid-thirties in the morning, rising to the upper 40’s in the afternoon with light wind and mostly cloudy sky. Tomorrow looks rainy, with temps in the low to mid-40’s with east wind at 20-24. Friday looks downright awesome. Partly cloudy sky, temps in the mid-40’s early and low 50’s (yes!!!) in the afternoon. Light wind. Saturday looks cloudy with light wind and temps in the low forties early, touching 50 in the afternoon. Sunday looks like a nuker of a west wind day.

On Mt. Hood, today starts off with orographic snow flurries for no accumulation, becoming clear midday with snow starting again around 10pm. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 2000′ midday and 3500′ overnight. We’ll see .3-.4” water value (WV) overnight, for 3-4” of new by 4am Thursday. Wind today will be W 25-30 early, W 15-20 midday and SW 20 in the evening.

Tomorrow, Thursday, looks interesting and difficult to forecast. The snow level will be 4000′ early, 5500′ at 10am, 6000′ at 4pm and 7000′ overnight. This is warm air coming in over colder air, and it’s a tough call as to when we’ll see the snow switch to rain. The bulk of the precip, .7-.8” WV, comes in before 4pm, so let’s call this 2-3” of heavy, wet snow at 5000′, with more snow higher up. The snow will switch to rain sometime between 1pm and 4pm, meaning the morning ski session could be plenty of fun. After 4pm, just .1” WV falls, as sprinkles. Wind tomorrow will be SW 20 early, W 30 at 1pm, WNW 30 at 4pm and W 25 at 10pm.

Friday looks partly cloudy in the morning, clear midday with high clouds moving in late afternoon. The freezing level will be 9000′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 20 early and SW 15 from mid-morning on.

Saturday starts off with high clouds. The freezing level will be 10,000′ early, dropping to 6000′ by 4pm and 4500′ by 7pm. Snow flurries move in sometime in the evening, but significant snow accumulation holds off until Sunday morning. Wind Saturday will be moderate SW. Sunday looks quite windy and very snowy, with up to 1” of water value.
