3/4 Mt. Hood snow, Gorge wind and weather, and local events

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

First off this morning, a very important request: My friend and coworker, Pierce Hodges, the Mt. Hood Meadows videographer, created this music video for a contest. He’s trying to win $5000, along with a big addition to his resume. I think he did a stellar, professional job, and am hoping you’ll think the same. Please click through and give him a thumbs up. If you think he did a great job, please share the link via your social media connections and help him win. Thank you!

It’s yet another sunny day on Mt. Hood. That’s better than a cloudy day. If we can’t have new snow, at least we can have sunshine! But a change is coming, and there’s snow in the forecast! There might even be some snow in the forecast for Parkdale…

In the Gorge today, we’ve lucked out: no inversion layer. It’s clear and cold, with the temp at my house at 28 degrees. We’ll see east wind increasing to 26-30 today, but even so, we should retain the clear sky, and temps should warm into the upper 40’s. If you’re going mountain biking today, watch out for freeze-thaw mud – avoid trails exposed to the open sky.

Tomorrow starts off cloudy in the Gorge, with a few snow flurries possible in the upper valley before temps warm. River elevation will be in the mid-30’s early, rising to the mid-40’s in the afternoon with light rain showers throughout the day. Wind will be E 21-24.

Gorge weather on Wednesday brings a few rain showers in the morning, tapering off after 1pm. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light in the morning, becoming W 21-24 in the afternoon.

Up on Mt. Hood, today looks clear and cold. The freezing level will be at the surface early, rising to 1500′ by 1pm and 3000′ by 7pm. Wind will be light and variable early, picking up to SW 20-25 by early afternoon.

Snow starts falling early tomorrow morning, by 7am at the latest. The snow level will be around 4000′ all day. We’ll get .3-.4” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 3-4” of new, followed by another .1-.2” overnight for less than 2” more. Wind will be SSW 25 early, becoming SW 20 overnight.

Wednesday sees light snow in the morning, becoming partly cloudy with flurries midday. The snow level will be 2500′ early, dropping to 1500′ midday. We’ll see .2-.3” WV by 4pm, for 2-3” of new, followed by flurries overnight with no accumulation. Wind will be SW 30 early, going to W 20-30 mid-morning and holding for the rest of the day.

Thursday through the beginning of next week looks dry and mostly cool on Mt. Hood, with periods of clouds alternating with sunshine.

In next-weekend-news: there’s a another work party on Syncline on the 9th (email Kay Kucera – kk@gorge.net – if you’re interested). Also, you should totally attend Nathan Herbeck’s slideshow, talk and film, ‘Bhutan, the last Shangri-la’ at 7:30pm at Columbia Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now.

Have an awesome day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Tuesday

Good morning,

I have to say that I’m disappointed in the snowfall total from last night: 1”. 1”?!?!?! That’s nothing! But something interesting did happen last night: the temp went from 44 degrees at 5500′ to 24 degrees, with nuking wind. When I saw the temp drop in the forecast and saw models predicting just 30-40mph of wind, I thought something might be amiss. Indeed, something was amiss: the wind ended up at 40-60 instead. Noted for future forecast.

Today looks clear on Mt. Hood. The freezing level will be around 1000′. Wind will be NW 25-35 early, 20-25 midday and N 20-30 in the afternoon. No precip.

Monday looks clear on Mt. Hood with clouds moving in late. The freezing level will be 500′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon and 5500′ overnight. Wind will be E 10 early, light and variable midday, and SW 20-30 in the evening and overnight. No precip.

Tuesday starts off cloudy, with snow flurries during the day. The snow level will be 3500′ early, falling to 2500′ in the afternoon. Total precip will be .1-.2” water value for a couple inches of new, at best. Flurries continue into Wednesday morning, for less than 1” of new. Wind on Tuesday will be SW 30 in the morning, 20-25 mid-morning and SW 15 in the afternoon and evening.

Wednesday contains a lot of model inconsistency, but it does look like we’ll see some snowfall. I can’t really give a solid forecast yet. Same goes for Thursday. After that, it looks like we’ll dry out again.

In the Gorge, we’ll see partly cloudy sky today with west wind at 24-28 east of the low clouds and 15-18 under the clouds. Temps will be near 40 degress this morning, rising to the upper 40’s this afternoon. Monday looks clear and cold to start (although strong east wind indicates we may see inversion clouds). Temps will be just below freezing early, rising to the mid-40’s in the afternoon. Wind on Monday will be E 30+. Tuesday looks cloudy in the Gorge, with a few scattered sprinkles. It’s possible, although unlikely that we’ll see some flurries or freezing rain, but I doubt that will happen. Temps Tuesday will be in the low 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light E all day.

In other news, there are two trail work parties today: WTA at Syncline at 8:30am, continuing all day. Spaghetti Factory in Post Canyon, from 9am-noon, meeting at Post Flats staging area. On the radar for next weekend: another work party on Syncline on the 9th (email Kay Kucera – kk@gorge.net – if you’re interested). Also, Nathan Herbeck’s slideshow, talk and film, ‘Bhutan, the last Shangri-la’ at 7:30pm at Columbia Center for the Arts. Tickets are on sale now.

Have an awesome day today!
