4/1 Gorge wind and incoming Mt. Hood snow

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

Summer continues… It was warm enough at Meadows yesterday that I walked to the employee bus in my bare feet. Even the streams of melting snow weren’t too cold to splash through. You know it’s warm when you’re walking around a ski resort barefoot! This barefoot weather will continue for another three days, and then it’s gone, as we’re heading back to normal early spring weather. April is going to come in like a lamb, but the lion will rule the savannah for the latter half of this week.

Today in the Gorge, you’ll find the perfect excuse to break out your wind sport gear for the first time this season. The Columbia was 46 degrees at The Dalles yesterday. That won’t get you to the 50/50 rule, but it will get you to 100 if the forecast high temps materialize today. Expect temps in the low 50’s this morning, rising to the mid-60’s this afternoon. Wind will rise to W 25-29 at the Hatchery this morning, with 21-24 at Stevenson, Hood River, and Mosier. Watch the wind switch summer-style to Rowena and Doug’s this afternoon.

Tomorrow brings temps in the upper 40’s early and mid 60’s later, with west wind at 10-15 early and gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Wednesday brings light wind, with temps in the mid 40’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon. Clouds move in on Thursday, with rain starting mid-afternoon, and after Thursday, we’ll see rain and colder temps through Monday.

On Mt. Hood, spring weather continues. Clear sky today, freezing level at 8000′, with NE wind at 10-20. Tomorrow looks clear, with the freezing level around 8000′ and W wind at 10-15. Wednesday looks clear, with the freezing level at 8000′ early and 10,000′ in the afternoon with WSW wind at 10-15.

We’ll see .5-1” of rain on Mt. Hood on Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, as the freezing level holds around 8000′. The snow level will slowly drop on Friday, and we should see the rain switch to snow Friday night, with new snow falling Saturday and Sunday above 4000′. But that’s a long way out to be forecasting…

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

When I got down from working at Meadows yesterday, it was downright hot in the valley. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. But my body was confused. I put on shorts and a jersey and went for a ride, and I wasn’t cold. I kept expecting to grow cold, but I didn’t. I grew hot, and I drank all my water, and my skin turned brown from riding in the late-afternoon sun. Ah, spring!

In Gorge weather today, we’ll see sunshine with temps in the low 40’s early and near 70 in the afternoon. Wind will be E 21-24 through noon at Stevenson and Rooster, dropping after that. The rest of the Gorge sees E wind at 5-8.

Tomorrow looks sunny too, with temps in the mid-40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon, with west wind at 18-23 early in the Central Gorge, picking up to 24-28 from the Hatchery to Doug’s in the afternoon. Tuesday brings another round of morning mid-40’s and afternoon upper 60’s, with light wind.

Up on Mt. Hood, the freezing level will be 12,000′ today, with light wind. Tomorrow sees the freezing level drop to 8-9000′ with light west wind. Tuesday looks just like Wednesday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday look warm and wet, with colder wet weather on Sunday and Monday.

Have an awesome day today!
