4/3 Mt. Hood SNOW!!!, Gorge no-wind, and ODOT bashing

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

This is it for a while. The nice last day. The last sunny day. The last warm day. Actually, tomorrow will be pretty warm too, but the blue sky and sunshine are about to go on vacation. Maybe you can chase the nice weather all the way to Hawaii?

In Gorge weather today, we’ll have sunshine. West wind at less than 10mph this morning will fade to nothing this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-40’s early and mid-60’s in the afternoon.

Thursday starts with high clouds and temp sin the upper 40’s, rising to the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Sprinkles start by 11am, or maybe 1pm at the latest. We’ll get .1-.3” rain, along with E wind at 22-25 all day.

Friday looks mostly cloudy with sprinkles and heavier rain overnight into Saturday, probably .2-.3” total. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and upper 50’s in the afternoon with W wind at 15-18. The weekend looks cold and wet, with highs in the upper 40’s and rain showers.

That cold and wet valley forecast translates to new snow for the mountain. Not today. Today will be warm and sunny on Mt. Hood, with the freezing level at 7500′ early and 11,000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10 early and SW 10 later.

Thursday starts with high clouds over Mt. Hood, with rain starting around 11am. The freezing level will be 12,000′ early, falling to 7000′ in the afternoon. Total rainfall will be .2” by 5pm and .2-.3” between 5pm and 5am. Wind will be SW 15-20 early, S 20-30 midday and SW 35-40 in the evening.

By 2am Friday, we should see a switch to snow. If not by 2am, then definitely by 8am; The snow level will be 6000′ at 2am, and 5000′ by 8am. We’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) for 1” of new by 5pm, with heavier snow overnight giving us .4-.6” WV by 5am for 4-6” of new snow by Saturday morning. Wind Friday will be SW 35-40 all day.

Saturday starts with more snow. The snow level will be 3000′ early and 2000′ by 11am (figures that ODOT made us remove our studded tires, doesn’t it – and don’t tell me to use studless: I flipped my car doing 35mph using those.) We’ll see .3-.4” WV during the day, for 3-4” of snow, with another .3” by 5am Sunday, for 2-4” more. Wind Saturday will be W 35 early, dropping to W 30 by mid-morning. Heavy snow continues on Sunday with the snow level around 3000′ … however, there could be a brief period of rain as well – depends on the exact storm track.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

It’s summer. I know it’s summer because I saw a guy driving around with windsurfing gear on his car yesterday. I also know it’s summer because there were tons of kiteboarders at the spit, despite the wind being gusty and the sky being partly cloudy. East, people, east. Go east of the cloud line for the best wind!

Speaking of clouds, it’s cloudy in Hood River this morning, and you may suspect it’s the winter nothing. Guess again! It’s the summer marine clouds pushing past Hood River for the first time this year. Exciting stuff! In the winter, you have to go west of the clouds to find the wind. In the summer. You must go east of the clouds. The Gorge is confusing, isn’t it?

Speaking of wind, you’ll find some today. 21-24 this morning east of the low clouds (likely Doug’s eastward) builds to 25-29 midday from Doug’s to Arlington, backing off to 21-24 in the afternoon. Tomorrow starts with light west wind, fading to zero wind in the afternoon. Thursday starts with light east wind, building to W 10-15 in the afternoon.

Gorge weather: slowly clearing sky today with temps in the mid-50’s early and mid-60’s in the afternoon. Clear tomorrow, with temps right around 50 early and 70 in the afternoon. Thursday: mid-50’s early, mid-60’s later under high overcast sky.

Up on Mt. Hood, spring is about to take a break in favor of winter. Today will be sunny, with the freezing level at 8000′ in the morning and 7000′ in the afternoon, with NW wind at 10-15 early and SW wind at 10-15 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks sunny and warm, with the freezing level at 7500′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon with W wind at 10-15.

Thursday starts with high clouds. The freezing level will be at 12,000′ in the morning, 8000′ midday and 7500′ in the evening. Rain starts by 11am, with .5” falling by 5pm, another .5” by 2am Friday, after which we’ll see a switch to snow, with .1-.2” water value (WV) by 5am. That should give us 1-2” of new. Wind Thursday will be SW 15 early, S 10-20 midday and SW 20 in the evening.

Friday starts with snow flurries. The freezing level will be 6000′ early, 4000′ midday, and 5000′ in the afternoon. Total snowfall during the day will be .1-.2” WV, for 1” or so of new snow. Another system moves in Friday night for a few inches of new snow by Saturday morning. Wind Friday will be WSW 40 early and W 30 midday, slowly fading into the evening.

Have an awesome day today!
