4/7 Mt. Hood blizzard forecast, Gorge nuclear wind forecast, and a warning for gardeners

Thank you for using this forecast! Your donations keep this forecast going – despite rumors to the contrary, nobody pays me to write this and post it. This forecast started as a way for me to find better windsurfing conditions. It morphed into a way for me to find better skiing in the winter. Seemed silly to keep that information to myself, so it’s here for you (almost) every day. Make a $12 or larger donation, and you’re on the email list for a year. No dealing with the twice-yearly pledge drive. Sometimes I even have prizes to give away from the email list sponsors. Thank you again for your support! Enjoy the snow and wind and sun!

Good morning,

Ah, this is my kind of day. I love having something to talk about in the forecast. I know… it makes the forecast long and tedious, but it’s way more fun for me! Before we do the short-term forecast, let’s do the long-range outlook. Blah, blah, blah, and then next Sunday, the weather looks to turn cold. Really cold for this time of year, with near-freezing temps at the surface. Crazy, right? So don’t go planting your tomatoes or cold-sensitive flowers quite yet.

In short-term news, it’s going to be a nuker of a day in the Gorge. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 50’s later, with showers in the central Gorge. Expect the wind, easterly at 5am, to switch to strong west by 9am, with 30-40+ east of The Dalles and strong, gusty wind in the central gorge. Pick of the day? Arlington or The Wall, because there’s a chance the upper low will kick off thunderstorms further east and screw up Threemile.

Tomorrow starts with temps in the low 40’s, rising to the low 50’s. Wind will be W 24-28 early, rising to 28-32 in the early afternoon, fading late in the day. Strongest, steadiest wind will be from Lyle to Biggs.

Tuesday starts with light wind, picking up to W 10-15 in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and upper 50’s later.

Up on Mt. Hood, today is the exciting day, hooray! It was your typical Mt. Hood day at 5am, with snow falling and moderate wind. However, by 9am, the wind will rise and the snow level will fall: 5000′ at 5am, 2500′ at 8am, and 2000′ or so at 2pm. About 1” water value (WV) falls by 5pm, for 6-9” of new, followed by another .3-.5” overnight, for 2-4” more. Wind will be SW 35-40 early, rising to W 50-60 by 9am, W 45-50 at 2pm and WNW 35-40 at 5pm.

Tomorrow sees a mix of flurries and sunshine, with no accumulation. The freezing level will be 2000′-2500′, and the wind will be nuclear: NW 45 early, WNW 30-35 midday and NW 25-35 in the afternoon.

Tuesday starts with high clouds. The freezing level will be 4000′ early, 5000′ midday and 11,000′ in the evening. Wind will be NW 10 early, rising to NW 30 in the afternoon.

Wednesday starts out clear, quickly becoming cloudy. The freezing level will be 12,000′ early, 8000′ midday, 7000′ at 2pm and 5500′ at 5pm. Sprinkles start falling mid-morning, with heavy precip between 2pm and 8pm\, likely falling as rain. Wind will be very strong: W 35-40 early, 45-50 mid-morning and W 50 for the rest of the day.

With the exception of Friday afternoon, the general trend in the long range forecast is for coldier, snowier weather…

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

It’s a lovely, wet start to the weekend. Hooray! Your garden will be happy. But don’t get too zealous with the planting, because the long-range forecast still shows unseasonably cold temps moving into the region at the end of next week. In the meantime… plant your lettuce and spinach and broccoli and peas and watercress and arugula and cross your fingers.

For you mountain bikers, there are work parties on Bad Motor Scooter in Post Canyon today and tomorrow, and there’s a work party on the Cascade Locks EasyCLIMB trail tomorrow. And then next Saturday, there’s tree planting on Seven Streams from 9am-noon.

You might have noticed it’s raining this morning? Gorge weather will be in the upper 40’s this morning, mid 50’s this afternoon, with on-and-off sprinkles all day and heavy, heavy rain tonight. Wind will be W 10-15 near Hood River and gusty 24-28 east of the low clouds.

Tomorrow looks very rainy in the Gorge. Temps will be in the mid-40’s early and low 50’s in the afternoon. Wind will be W 25-30 east of The Dalles, picking up to 35+ between 2pm and 5pm. Expect strong, but very gusty, wind in the central Gorge too.

Monday looks partly cloudy, with temps in the mid-40’s early and upper 40’s late, with west wind at 25-29 from Doug’s to Maryhill, strongest early, fading in the afternoon.

On Mt. Hood, the interesting weather continues. It is snowing this morning, and the snow level will continue to drop to 3500′ or so. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) by 5pm, for 2-3” more snow. We’ll see another 1”-1.25” tonight, for 8-11” of new snow by Sunday morning. Wind today will be WSW 30-40 early, becoming SW 30-40 in the afternoon as the next system approaches.

Sunday is a crapshoot. Remember what I said yesterday about the path of a low pressure system making a huge difference in the wind? Well, the models can’t decide if the low is going to track north or south of Mt. Hood. If it tracks north, we’ll see WNW wind at 50-60 tomorrow. If it tracks south, we’ll see light wind early, rotating through various compass points at 30ish mph. So sorry, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens! What we do know is that we’ll see a lot of new snow: the snow level will be around 2000′ all day, and we’ll get .8-1.0” WV, for 8-10” of new snow by 5pm, followed by another 1-2” overnight.

Monday looks partly cloudy on Mt. Hood, quickly becoming clear, with the freezing level at 1500′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be NW 30 early, becoming N 30 midday and slowly fading into the afternoon.

Tuesday brings high clouds and warming: The freezing level starts at 4000′ and rises to 12,000′ by 5pm. Wind will be NW 15-20 early and 25-30 in the afternoon.

Have an awesome day today!
