Good morning,

The high clouds associated with the upper level low and southerly flow have already started building today. Clouds this early means a pretty good chance of building thunderstorms (nothing too exciting) this afternoon.

If you were hoping for windsurfing or kiting, well, the wind will cooperate with the bike riders today. We’ll see light wind early. In the afternoon, we’ll see increasing clouds and a chance of those thunderstorms, and the wind will pick up to the 17-20 range from Stevenson east to The Dalles.

That low pressure system causing all this trouble with the blue sky crosses the Cascades tomorrow, and we’ll have a windy start. I think 17-20 near Hood River and Mosier early is likely, picking up to 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington in the afternoon.

Tuesday looks windy too, with low twenties just east of Hood River early picking up to 25-29, maybe stronger, late as a cold system pushes into the Northwest.

If you’d like to go rafting or kayaking today, the White Salmon is at 4.5 feet, the Klickitat is at 2900cfs, the Little White is around 3.4 feet and the Wind River is at 5.3 feet.

Coming up tomorrow night, Columbia Center for the Arts is playing a very cool movie, Journey from Zanskar, and on Tuesday night, there’s a great talk at the Waucoma Club about kayking and river preservation in Kamchatka Russia.

Good morning,

Today is stage 1 of the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic, and the racers are getting lucky this year with light wind. Today’s route runs through Mosier, Rowena Crest and Sevenmile Hill, so if you’re not doing anything go cheer them on. Winds today will be easterly, in the 13-15 range at Stevenson and Rooster. From Hood River east, it will be light, picking up to 5-10 in the afternoon. These low clouds we have in the Gorge this morning… they’ll burn off pretty quickly leaving us with a sunny day (Cathy? Sunbathing? Call me?)

Coming up tomorrow, high pressure inland combines with low pressure off the coast for east wind at Stevenon and Rooster in the 17-20 range. In Hood River, we’ll have light wind early, picking up to 5-10 in the afternoon. Tomorrow is the high-speed Criterium race (where bikers ride in circles for a long time and then sprint around the last circle) in Hood River in the afternoon, so stop by a check it out.

Sunday looks calm in the morning, with west wind picking up to the 12-15 range in the afternoon. If you’re into high wind kiting or windsurfing, Monday and Tuesday, Tuesday especially, are your days.

Coming up this evening, there’s an open house in the *old* Northwave building at 1225 Wasco. Now in the building are the following businesses: Hermosa Bike Tours, Kuvia kayak sails, Airtime and Watson Performance. Come down and check out these local businesses and get free Brats and Beer.

Also, tonight is First Friday in Hood River, as well as the first day of the White Salmon Spring Festival. Remember, there’s an all-sport swap meet tomorrow from noon to three. Gear drop-off is tonight starting at 4:30. This weekend, is the Black Dog Dual Sport ride (Hood River County Fairgrounds – Saturday on Mt. Hood and Sunday in Post Canyon), The Tour de Hood road bike ride (out on the roads), and a class V whitewater race on the Little White Salmon River (details to follow, but you can get some on Facebook).

I’ve had a few questions about more mountain bike trails. There’s still snow on all the north-facing slopes and there are still trees down on the trails. So, no, nothing else has opened up yet (and that’s straight from Jimmy T, who’s sitting next to me.)

And best of all, it’s going to be in the 70’s today and the 80’s tomorrow and Sunday.
