Good morning!

This week’s report is brought to you by 2nd Wind Sports at 210 Oak Street in Hood River. It’s Labor Day Weekend (well, almost), and that means it’s sale time at 2nd Wind. Come on in and consign your old gear (it’s way easier than selling it on iWind/iKite) and pick up some new gear at a great price. 2nd Wind has awesome, cheerful, intelligent employees who will help you spend your money wisely. It’s going to be a windy long weekend, so throw all your gear in the car, get down here, and swing by 2nd Wind to say hello!

We’re starting off with very light east winds this morning, perfect weather for wakeboarding or road biking. The calm weather will last until midday, when the thermal trough shifts eastward and a cold front approaching the coast turns the flow onshore. By early afternoon, westerlies should pick up into the 17-20 range, first at Stevenson, then for a couple of gusty hours from the Hatchery to Doug’s, then shifting further east in the evening as the front gets closer.

West winds pick up several notches tomorrow as a low pressure trough along the coast drives wind to the heat low in the desert. Westerlies start off in the 21-24 range from Hood River down to Doug’s, picking up to the 25-28 range. As the front pushes across the Cascades, winds fill in out east in the 26-29 range.

Westerlies continue on Sunday, and likely will blow through the middle of next week as cool weather in Portland combines with sunshine in the desert.

If you’re looking for something to do tonight or this weekend, it’s First Friday in Hood River tonight, the Kayak Shed shop paddle meets tomorrow at Husum at 10am, and there’s a swap meet on Sunday. And finally, don’t forget about the Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim on Monday!

Boaters, the White Salmon’s at 1 ¾ feet and the Klickitat, which is now open again for boating and came up a little with the rain, is at 760 cfs.

Did you see the new snow on Adams and Hood the last couple of days? Just four days until Skibowl and Timberline passes go on sale… I just wish the Skibowl pass came with free Skibowl nachos.

Have a great day today!

Good morning!

This week’s report is brought to you by Crossfit Hood River , where you can get your whole body in gear for ski season! Sure, you go to Crossfit in part to burn some calories, but there’s a lot more to it than that. Jeri will help you become stronger and faster, and she’ll turn your weaknesses into your strengths. She’ll help you bulk up, lean down, or just get your quads ready for some drop-knee turns this winter! Speaking of dropping, drop in for a free workout at the not-gym at 1816 Belmont to check it out. Class times are Mon-Fri at 6:30am, Mon-Sat at 9am, and Mon-Thur at 5:30pm. One of the people on the email list is going to win a free month membership this week!

We’re going to see some east wind today, but more importantly, the dirt on the mountain biking trails is in perfect shape. Post is excellent right now, and although I haven’t had a report on the 44 road trails, I know the mountains had over an inch of rain the last couple of days, so the higher elevation trails must be in great shape. If you have a chance to get out and ride today, do it! If you can’t get out until this evening, remember, it’s Post and Pint night at Dirty Fingers Bike Repair!

If you have to wait until tomorrow to ride, the Disco Divas are riding Post Canyon around 9am. Give Discover Bikes a call for more information.

As for the wind today, the 5am east gradient was at .05, but there wasn’t much happening on the river. The easterlies will slowly pick up today, maxing out in the 20-24 range at Stevenson and Rooster around midday, and getting gusty in the afternoon.

The easterlies look similar tomorrow, with 17-20 likely in the morning. By late afternoon tomorrow, we should see light west winds.

Coming up Saturday, cool air sits at the coast and the thermal trough shifts east for a very windy day through the Gorge. It’s not clear yet where the strongest wind will be, but upper twenties somewhere between the Hatchery and Doug’s looks very likely. And finally, don’t forget that the final swap meet of the season is Sunday at the Expo Center!

Boaters, the White Salmon is at 1.75 feet and the KIickitat has reopened. Feel free to recreate on the Klickitat now!

Have a great day today!
