Random Morning Thoughts

Wow. Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Well done, men. It would appear that legal marijuana has no effect on the concentration skills of NFL players. On a less obvious, and equally delightful note, Rosauers is currently stocking purple Hawaiian sweet potatoes, one of my all-time favorite foods. I just ate one for breakfast. Pure bliss. How can you not love bright purple food?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s more like the Mt. Hood sun forecast.

We’ll see another sunny day today, with the free air freezing level (FAF) around 6000′ early, rising to 12,000′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid-30’s early and mid-40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be light early and SW 10 in the evening.

Something might happen tomorrow. Like some clouds in the afternoon, and maybe even just a few sprinkles overnight, but no measurable precip. The FAF starts at 12,000′ and drops to 9000′ in the afternoon. Temps will hover in the mid-40’s all day. Wind will be SW 10 early and SW 20 in the afternoon.

Wednesday looks partly cloudy with a very slight chance of a few orographic snow flurries but a better chance of sunshine. Actually, that’s just the current forecast. The models are having a tough time with this, so the forecast could change a lot over the next 24-36 hours. The snow level will be 5500′ early, 3500′ midday and 6000′ in the evening. Wind will be W 20 early, NW 20 midday and NE 15 in the evening.

After Wednesday we are back to dry ridging and inversions.

Gorge Weather

Oh jeez. I’m wearing my pjs. Do I really have to go out there and look at the cloud cover? Ok. Be right back. Brr. My feet are freezing. It’s cloudy. There’s no frost on my car. We’ll see another late-breaking inversion today with temps climbing into the upper 30’s. Tomorrow starts off just like today, but a weather system moving in should break the inversion earlier, leaving us with high overcast sky and temps near 40 degrees. Wednesday looks partly cloudy with temps in the low 40’s early and upper 40’s late.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s officially nuking again, with an E .24 gradient driving the wind bus. It’s blowing 53 mph at Rooster Rock this morning and 30 at Stevenson. Thanks to iWindsurf for those numbers. It will continue to nuke today with temps in the mid to upper 30’s. Tempting. Very tempting. Not. Or maybe. Oh why can’t I keep my hands warm?

Tomorrow starts with east wind at 28-32. That wind will drop to 17-21 or less in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with light west wind as a weak weather system moves through and switches to light east wind as high pressure rebuilds.

Road and Mountain Biking

Sandy is epic. Gorge 400 is epic. Post is staying frozen until midday. I do not have a recent Syncline report, which means I should probably go ride Moab today. I saw a Strava ride of Oak-Surveyor’s-Oak, so Oak Ridge must be clear, and parts of Surveyor’s must be clear. For the spandex crowd, it’s warm enough that maybe, just maybe, the roads aren’t frosty this morning, but big east gradients are going to mean chilly headwinds on many Gorge road rides today.

I went to my PO Box this morning on the way to catch the bus. There was a package. I opened it on the bus. Inside was a t-shirt reading, “I pooped today!” I almost peed myself laughing. Thanks, bestie. You know me too well.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Things are looking a bit more promising for a precipitation event of some sort on Mt. Hood this Wednesday, but I’m not going to put any numbers on it yet, as we’re still a bit far out.

Today will be sunny early, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon and evening. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid-40’s early and low 40’s late. Wind will be W 15mph.

Tomorrow looks sunny. The FAF will be 10,000′ early and 12,000′ in the afternoon. Temps at 5000′ will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 40’s late. Wind will be light and variable, becoming SW 10.

Tuesday looks sunny early, becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon as Wednesday’s system approaches. The FAF will be 11,000′ early and 10,000′ late with temps at 5000′ in the mid to upper 40’s. Wind will be SW 10-15.

If the current model runs don’t change, we’ll see a system move in on Wednesday with the snow level around 5500′ and maybe .5” moisture. In a strange twist, models are currently showing the precip coming in with south wind at first, switching to east wind. That’s very, very unusual… So let’s see if that holds. If it does, we’ll have something interesting to talk about.

Gorge Weather

I forgot to do the morning weather check today, so I just glanced out the window on the bus. It appears to be cloudy. Speaking of cloudy, yesterday was horrendous in the Gorge and fabulous on the mountain. While I was parading around the deck in short sleeves and dark glasses looking mean and official, people in the valleys were curled into little inversion-fleeing balls in front of fireplaces.

I think the inversion will stick around again today. Expect clouds with temps in the mid-30’s this morning and clouds with temps in the upper 30’s this afternoon. Tomorrow looks similar. So does Tuesday.

Maybe we should all go to the coast where it’s more likely to be sunny, and where we’ll see big waves: 11’@15 today, 10’@21 tomorrow (whoa), and 9’@15 on Tuesday. Coast wind will be NE 5-10 today, E 10-15 tomorrow (a great day to watch at Seaside), and SE 5-10 on Tuesday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Why yes, the windiest winter ever continues today with easterlies at 26-30 at RR this morning, fading to 13-15 this afternoon. Easterlies pick back up to 35-45 at RR tomorrow, with 26-30 at Stevenson. Easterlies continue Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Yesterday’s Post Canyon report said it was all frozen early, but that by 1pm, the exposed areas had thawed. So, if you’re going to ride Post, ride early. Yesterday’s Sandy ridge report was perfect dirt and t-shirt weather.
