Yesterday I ran into my anesthesiologist at the top of Cascade and was picked up hitchhiking by my therapist’s former boss. I find this very amusing. #smalltownliving #itsasmallworld

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

I am sorry to report that I don’t have any snow to report. But today will be another sunny, amazing day on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000 all day. Temps at 5000′ will be in the mid-40’s. Wind will be NW 10 all day.

Tomorrow starts off clear and cooler, with temps in the mid-30’s between 5000′ and 9000′ and below freezing both above and below those elevations. High clouds move in early in the afternoon, and thicken and lower as the day goes on. Wind will be W 10mph.

Precipitation starts just after midnight (or maybe a bit later) on Tuesday morning. At this point, temps will be above freezing between 4000′ and 6500′. This above-freezing band will fluctuate a bit during the day, but this means we’re likely to see rain and freezing rain on the hill, rather than snow. We’ll see about .5” water value (WV) between 1am and 4pm. After 4pm, the inversion will break, the snow level will fall to 5500, and the precip will taper off. If we’re lucky, we’ll see an inch or two at 5500′ after 4pm, but at this point I’m not envisioning luck on our side. Wind on Tuesday will be S 20 early, SW 30 midday and W 40 in the evening.

Another storm system moves through Wednesday, but at this point it looks like it will be too far south of us to bring much in the way of precip, and that’s probably a good thing as temps look a bit on the warm side.

Gorge Weather

As if the dreaded Nothing cloud wasn’t bad enough, when I got on the bus this morning it was 31 degrees and SNOWING in Hood River and clear on Mt. Hood. I called NOAA and filed a complaint. No, really. I did. The models swear this crap will dissipate today, but I’m not so sure. I think it’s going to stay gloomy, and I think the temp will only rise to the upper 30’s.

Tomorrow looks similar, minus the snow. Or maybe it’ll snow again. Things get a lot more interesting in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, when it’ll be below freezing in the Gorge and above freezing on the mountain. Expect precip to start as a mix of sleet and snow between 1am and 7am, switching to freezing drizzle, maybe .1-.2” worth. Temps in the HR and Upper Valley areas won’t warm above freezing until midday, at the earliest, so expect slick roads. By late Tuesday evening, we’ll be back to just-rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s windy again – 11mph at Stevenson with 42mph at Rooster. With a E .13 gradient this morning, you can expect Steven’s Locks to climb to 26-30. The wind should hold at Rooster all day today. An upper low swings off the coast tomorrow, causing gradients to climb, giving us 40-50 at Rooster and 30-40 at Steven’s Locks. Expect 30-35 out of the east on Tuesday.

Road and Mountain Biking

So much for road biking – the roads are icy now with this ridiculous snow falling from the sky. This makes me think we should all be riding the Cooper Spur Loop. Sure, there’s gravel on the road, but it’s probably above freezing up there!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve never been so happy to be at work. I’m above the inversion. It’s still dark as I write this, but I’m going to see sun for hours and hours and hours today.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Today will be sunny on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ and temps at 5000′ will be in the low 40’s early, rising to the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10 early and NW 15 in the afternoon.

Sunday looks sunny. How appropriate. The FAF will be 10,000′ early and 9000′ in the afternoon with 5000′ temps in the mid-40’s all day. Wind will be NW 10 in the morning becoming a bit more northerly in the afternoon.

Monday starts off clear and colder, with temps above freezing between 3000′ and 9000′, with 5000′ temps in the mid-30’s. Clouds move in midday. Wind will be W 10mph.

Precip starts around 10pm on Monday. Temps will be below freezing at 5000′, but I suspect we’ll see freezing rain to the tune of .1-.2” water value by 4am Tuesday, followed by more frozen sprinkles during the day on Tuesday.

A much wetter system moves in early Wednesday morning. At this point, it looks much too warm to fall as snow, but a lot could change between now and then.

Gorge Weather

It’s cloudy again, and there’s a bit of freezing mist falling from the sky, or there was when I left my house. I didn’t have to scrape my windshield, but I did have to run the wipers. I probably should have scraped for better visibility.

Expect inversion clouds today with temps rising to near 40 in the afternoon. Expect a cloudy start tomorrow with a pretty good chance of the clouds breaking in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid-30’s early and upper 40’s late. Monday starts with low clouds and temps in the mid 30’s. The low clouds should break, but high clouds will move in and block the sun in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 30’s.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s nuking again this morning with an E .23 gradient. Easterlies will be 45-55 at Rooster this morning and in the 30-40 range at Steven’s Locks, dropping to 26-30 at Rooster this afternoon. Tomorrow starts with light easterlies, picking up to 24-28 in the afternoon. Nuking east winds return on Monday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Hmph. Go to Sandy.
