Random Morning Thoughts

Know what’s awesome? Thousands of super-stoked people packed into one powder-covered ski resort. Total bliss on many levels. And can I just say that the Rossignol Soul 7 180cm ski is out-of-this-world good?

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

This set of model runs is a forecaster’s dream. So exciting! And even better: it’s back to snow at the ski resorts, despite a brief period of freezing rain last night between 5pm and 8pm. We’ll see snow at the resorts this morning with the snow level around 5000′. Temps between 5000′ and 8000′ slowly rise this morning, finally causing a switch to rain around… oh, let’s say noonish. The snow level then rises to 8000′ or higher, holding through 4amish Saturday. Before we see the precip switch, we’ll get .3” water value (WV), for 2-3” of new snow. Then we’ll see another .6-.8” WV fall as rain between 1pm today and 4am Saturday. Wind today will be SW 60 early, going to W 55 mid-afternoon and becoming a little more southerly but equally strong tonight.

Saturday looks un-freaking-believeable. The snow level starts at 8000′ at 4am, and falls to 5500′ at 7am and 3000′ at 10am, dropping to 2000′ in the evening as a massive cold front slams into Mt. Hood. Expect 1.5” WV between 7am and 4pm for 12-18” of new snow. Expect another 1.5” WV between 4pm Saturday and 1am Sunday for another 12-18” of new snow. Best. Meadows.After. Dark. EVER. And day skiing won’t be too shabby either! I hope you don’t mind wind, and take these numbers with a grain of salt, because low lifts should be a bit protected by the southerly cant to the wind: WSW 75 at 4am, 65 at 7am, 60 at 10am, rising to 70 in the afternoon and becoming W 55 overnight. Whoa.

Sunday starts with a few breaks in the weather, but more precip moves in mid-morning. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 3500′ at 10am, 5500′ at 1pm, and a depressing 8000′ at 7pm. We’ll see .6” WV between 4am and 4pm for another 4-6” of snow. Then we’ll see another .4” WV in the afternoon – that’ll fall as a mix of rain and snow. Boo-hiss. Wind Sunday will be WNW 50 early, rising to WNW 65 in the evening.

Next week starts off dry and warm, with no precip and the freezing level around 8000′.

Gorge Weather

Wet and windy is the mantra for the next few days, but you probably shouldn’t use that for your meditation practice, as you’ll end up unhappy. It’ll be near 50 in the Gorge today with rain increasing after 10am. Add moderate west wind to that forecast. Tomorrow starts in the upper 40’s, but temps drop to the low 40’s in the afternoon. Lots of rain tomorrow and nuking west wind. It’ll be slightly cooler and slightly less rainy on Sunday, but equally windy.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Holy shit. It was blowing 47mph at Rowena (thanks, iWindsurf/iKitesurf) at Rowena at 5:30am. With morning gradients of .17(pdx-dls) and .09(dls-psc), you’re looking at a nuking morning on the river. 30-40 everywhere east of Hood River, with the strongest wind near Lyle and perhaps Maryhill. The wind will drop to 21-24 by afternoon.

If you miss today, don’t worry, because 30-40+ is the call for tomorrow afternoon east of Lyle. Same goes for Sunday. The western Gorge will be rainy, with gusty up-and-down wind. River water temp is 40 degrees. Please sail or kite with a buddy for safety.

Not much today, but tomorrow is the (wet and windy) Cold Lap cyclocross ride with the folks at Dirty Fingers. 3 o’clock at the shop. On Sunday, there’s ping pong at the armory at 3pm and (wind-affected) rugby at 3pm at Mosier School.

Have an awesome day today!
